New PSTWO SCPH-75001

Just picked up a brand new SCPH-75001, gonna throw a cyrstal chip in it, does this version need the laser fix? or should I be good to go without it?

You don't need a laser fix.

Just make sure you use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden brand dvds. You can still burn your laser if you do not use good media.
