New laser fitted in V3 giving problems
New laser fitted in V3 giving problems –
05-31-2004,06:16 AM
I installed a new laser in a chipped V3 and it will read and play everything fine except backups that are burnt right to the edge of the disc (4.5 gb+) I use Ritek media and the offending backups work fine on other modded PS2's. The backups boot up fine then after the Playstation 2 logo it cant seem to focus on the track at the edge of the disc, I have tried everything to sort it such as moving the white cog and the screw on the other side of the laser but its still doing it. Any help would be much appreciated on this as I have never seen it before and am lost!
Many thanks
mfield.

are you sure its brand new ? a brand new khs-400c needs to have a resister desoldered from the bottom of the laser.

Usually the outer edge of the burnt media is worse quality than the inner one, so usually a used laser has a hard time to read from that part. The question is that, was your laser really brand new, or it was just said (and sold) so.

The laser was definitely brand new. I had to de-solder the blob of solder on the underneath of the laser. I even tried another new laser and got the same result! Any ideas?

Phew, if that was a new laser as you say then I have no clue unfortunatelly... Maybe the BA/or some other components on the board ? There was a discussion about a problem that sounded like yours, when some disks caused clicking and focus problems. (just with a few type of media + games. I personally have seen only two machines that had this problem.) I do not remember correctly who wrote about this on Ps2newz some months ago, but the final solution was the change of the board itself. It was not known what components on the board caused this problem, but it seemed some V7/V5 suffered from this. What about (if you can of course) give it a try and swap the board itself ? I am sure if that is the problem you won't be that happy, but it will save you from playing with the pots and the white cog at least.

I will try and swap the board and see how that goes, the thing is the machine is a v3 and not a v5/v7.
Many thanks for the help!

There is no such thing as buying a new PS2 laser. Yes, many people advertise these for sale, but they are all actually used/reconditioned. I have sold many 100's of lasers and I've never seen a real new one.

Regardless of the fact that the laser is used/reconditioned I am still getting the same problem when I install a different used/reconditioned laser, whereas the same lasers work fine in other machines.
