Need help. My PS2 is acting weird!

Hi guys,
I got a Duo 2 SE chip in my PS2 v10, and it was working fine, until I wanted to use it earlier today and it wouldn't start up (black screen). Which was weird cause I had used it just hours before. Then it gave me the startup screen and started loading the game (where you see playstation 2 written on the screen) and then it stopped. And after several retries, I kept getting a black screen. Then I took the thing apart to see if any wires went loose or something. But it all looked fine. THen it started booting again, but it would not read any discs (it would keep reading them and reading them and eventually give a disc error). Also really weird is that all of a sudden the startup screen (the first picture you see when you turn it on, you know the pillars with the lights in between) was different! It now just showed some cubes with the light in between.
What is going on here? Any expert opinions?!
Really need your help!
How could this all of a sudden happen?!
TIA!

Did you do the romeo mod? Sounds like a laser problem.

no I did the Duo 2 SE modchip.
And if it was the laser (btw it happened out of the blue, it just stopped working) then the start up screen wouldnt be different right?
