the dvd controller can be a source to laser clicking and often resulting in failure of the diode but clicking does not always mean this as you mentioned it can also mean a laser adjustment is needed or the lense needs cleaning the first step on the road to recovery of a laser is first
1} clean the lense with lets say lighter fluid and a q tip or ear bud
then do some test's if the ps2 functions normally job done if this does not work go to step 2
2}adjust the height of the laser this can be done with the white cog situated at the back of the laser unit usally 4 to 6 clicks clockwise solve's dvd-r issues if this does not work step 3
3} you need to adjust the tilt of the optical pickup this can be done with the small torx screw on the laser unit near the left sled rail its hard to explain to do this repair without pictures and you need to calibrate it using digital calipers to correct the tilt.
clicking is a focus problem what happens is the beam is set to focus on a tight track on the disc if the focusing goes beyond the range of the coils you hear the clicking this is the lense of the laser snapping back it cant find focus all the above adjustment really do is bring the laser closer to the discs surface so the coils have a greater reach obtain focus.
if none of the above work you need to adjust the protentiometres
or trimming caps locate underneath the laser to do this you need a correct pot tool usally plastic you can use a small screwdriver to adjustment but its important its not a magnetic one otherwise your setting will be incorrect from here i will point you to the faq for guidence because its impossible to explain the rest without pictures to aid you.
hope this help's
