    Hi Experts
I need your help in fixing my DMS3 V2. I have installed the chip in v5 PS2. Ps2 backups and Ps1 backup?s works fine but, original DVD games or movie or DVD backup doesn?t boot. This is a brand new PS2. I have spent one day for installation. Now I am very disappointed. I thing you are expert in mod chips you may have lot of ideas. Please help me. I live in UAE in this part of the world nobody knows about DMS3 , they all know about Magic 3.1 only

    Thanks In Advance.

first of all v5 is not a new system the current ps2 revision is version 7/8

if the only function that is not working correctly is dvd original and dvd movies + backup dvd-r the problem is with the cd/dvd controller the first check to make is point S is secured correctly or is not shorting against any other point's, i presume all other feature's are working ?.

So this rules out the problem being the bios wire's, if worst comes to worst and the above point is not the problem i advise you to resolder just the cd/dvd controller wire's taking great care on how you route the wire's and making sure every point is in the correct place from dms3 to mboard.

On a last note when a dvd format disc is inserted do you here any adverse sound eg, clicking or constant seeking/reading noises including clicks ?

i have the same problem with my PS2 (39002) with Magic 3.1 installed. and yes EnTiTy, it does have the clicking noise about every second when trying to read DVDs.

so you think its the dvd controller and doesn't need a laser adjustment?

the dvd controller can be a source to laser clicking and often resulting in failure of the diode but clicking does not always mean this as you mentioned it can also mean a laser adjustment is needed or the lense needs cleaning the first step on the road to recovery of a laser is first

1} clean the lense with lets say lighter fluid and a q tip or ear bud
then do some test's if the ps2 functions normally job done if this does not work go to step 2

2}adjust the height of the laser this can be done with the white cog situated at the back of the laser unit usally 4 to 6 clicks clockwise solve's dvd-r issues if this does not work step 3

3} you need to adjust the tilt of the optical pickup this can be done with the small torx screw on the laser unit near the left sled rail its hard to explain to do this repair without pictures and you need to calibrate it using digital calipers to correct the tilt.

clicking is a focus problem what happens is the beam is set to focus on a tight track on the disc if the focusing goes beyond the range of the coils you hear the clicking this is the lense of the laser snapping back it cant find focus all the above adjustment really do is bring the laser closer to the discs surface so the coils have a greater reach obtain focus.

if none of the above work you need to adjust the protentiometres
or trimming caps locate underneath the laser to do this you need a correct pot tool usally plastic you can use a small screwdriver to adjustment but its important its not a magnetic one otherwise your setting will be incorrect from here i will point you to the faq for guidence because its impossible to explain the rest without pictures to aid you.

    hope this help's

    Thanks for your reply EnTiTy
I am not very sure about the version of my PS2 . I have checked the DMS3 installation diagram the v5/6 matches my PCB. But I have got gap Bios. So I thought it would be V5. This unit was brought before 7 months and kept un-used, not even once I have used this unit.

The functions I have checked PS2 game cd-r it booted fine. Then I have tired ps1 game it also worked fine. Then tried the DVD original game, it tries to read and periodically I can hear a soft tic sound and I can see the cd spinning and it varies the speed after some time, it says disk read error. This is same for all the DVD, DVD-r , DVD original, DVD gold. I am not getting any dev.olution menu such. Even if I pres triangle button while switching it on.

I have opened it twice and checked it 2 times the wires soldering points seems ok. But I am not sure about the routing of cable maybe I am doing something wrong. Can I take a picture of it and post it here so you can have a look. I have used ULTRA SCSI hard disk cable as it is very thin and it is also as ribbon.

I am eagerly waiting for your answer.

I had this problem and traced it to a bad install. The system booted and all but I could not play an original. I am not sure wish wire was shorting but i opened the system up and moved some wires around. This fixed the clicking noises and now boots great. It appears to be possibly a bios wire maybe.
    Hope this helps.

but there also seams to be other reasons why. check out the thread and see what you think. some of the information is irrelivant as most talk about only DVD-rs not working and not all DVDs (HK, Silver, original)

im gonna look in mine now and see if it is the chip wires.

    This is a DMS3 V2 chip.
After tracing each wire and re-soldering them also the problem existed. Now I have removed the chip out and the cables also but still I couldn?t play any DVD movie or any DVD original game. But original cd games works fine. Now I am blank I don?t know what to do and where to check. (In-fact I didn?t try any DVD movie before I open this PS2. since it was new I just tried a PS2 cd original it worked fine. Then I opened it. Now I don?t know whether this problem was there in the new device or I damaged it. But I installed this mod chip with lot of care and concentration.)
Please help me to identify the problem??..

nope, no luck. i tried right down to 600ohms. didn't want to go further. i also tried adjusting the azimuth and cleaning the laser. my cd games go much better now but DVD still don't go.

i think it must be the chip. im gonna send it away to Fixtronics, they are the PS2 authorized dealers in New Zealand, and said the most i will pay, even if it means new machine, will be NZ$210.00 (US$105.00). hope its not that much though.
