Okay my buddy just modded his v9 ps2 with a Magic V. The problem we're having is that it will not read anything on CD format like; PS1 originals, PS1 backups, PS2 CDR's, Audio Cds, or Audio Cd-rs.

And before you say it, yes I know how to switch it into ps1 mode etc... And I know how to burn things properly for a magic chip as I have one in my ps2.
The console was ofcourse completely functional before the mod.

The system is booting DVDs; PS2 originals, PS2 backups, Dvd movies, DVD-r movies.

And to boot dvds with the Magic chips you do need to switch it into ps1 mode so I know that the mod install is switching. I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution I've also tried cleaning his laser to no avail. Is it possibly the "s" wire or some other wire on the install?

I just find it odd that it will read dvds completely fine in any format but will not read a cd or cdr of anytype. This is the first battle i'm losing with a ps2. Tomorrow or today actually damn i need sleep I'm going to double check all of the soldering but we tested continuity before putting it back together though. And it was installed under video magnification so I know there aren't any solder balls anywhere.

Can you post a pic of your install? Might be easier to help you.

Sounds like something is wrong with the install, does it play audio CDs when the chip is off/standby?

No it won't play audio cds with the chip off or in ps1 mode.

Im not too familiar with the Magic chips, never carried them because a wile back they had an issue with a batch of bad ones. Maybe you got a bad chip? If youve got others, swap it out and see if that helps.

The batch of bad ones was with the 3.1... there's been nary a problem with the V's.

By the way, which MagicV is it? the 50K or the 5K6?

There are several wires responsible for media selection... the S wire is responsible for PS1 games, but not PS2-CD-based titles. I'd look particularly carefully at the Y and A wires on the front, and the 8 controller points... probably the via's on the back (B - I).

AND, if you know how, check the pots setting of the laser for CD's... if it's over 1100 ohms, I'd drop it by a 100... see what that does (just remember the initial setting, so you can go back to it).

    Hope that helps.
