There are clones but you cant flash them to the latest firmware since they are protecting the firmware. Ripper 3.2 is a clone but its more money than the HK clones. Duo2 is cheap and works well or magic 5 series. I hope this helps.

Try to stay away from enay of the clones.

Your best bet would be a Duo2se there dirt cheap and relyable.

Where are you located? $140 for installation + chip is too expensive. Anyways, all the functions you want to have are not available on Duo 2 SE. Duo 2 SE is just an economy chip that does nothing more than, play backup and dvd movies. It might not be compatible with AR MAX and GS. I'm not sure but do your research on here. Import games? I hope you're not importing any PAL games because Duo 2 SE will not convert PAL signal to NTSC signal or vice versa. Good luck.

For basic options get a duo2... for most advanced features get a Matrix Infinity.

I recommend the Matrix Infinity for what you want to do. But if it's too expensive for you then you will have to go with the Duo 2 SE. It might work with AR Max or GS.

Since it's sort of on-topic for the thread, can someone explain to this noob what constitute basic features, and what constitutes advanced features? I'm looking to pick up a premod sometime soon, and I naturally don't want to spend any more dough than I have to.

My only requirements are that it play import/backup PS2 & PS1. Surely every chip does that?

You can play imported games fine with the Duo 2 SE as long as the game you are playing have the same video format as your console. I'm talking about PAL and NTSC format. If you're in the USA or Japan, your games has to be encoded in NTSC. If you're in Europe then your games are encoded in PAL and you can't play PAL games on NTSC machine without converting it to NTSC or vice versa. Matrix Infinity has the ability to convert PAL games into NTSC and NTSC games in PAL without any manual patching or anything. It does it automatically.

So if you want a cheap solution, just make sure you're gonna play imported games with the same video signal as your console.
