I inherited an extra mod chip years ago and never had a second PS2 to put it in. I have since acquired a (damaged but working) second unit, and found the old mod chip recently while cleaning our old junk. But I have a problem. This chip is so old that the included instructions only cover 3 types of SCPH-30001, while the unit I have now is SCPH-39001. There is a pretty good chance the chip won't work with this much newer of a unit, but I figure it is worth at least checking on. I figure the first step is trying to figure out what kind of chip it is.
The chip itself is a generic 12c508a, so no help there. Turning to the instructions, I find myself with two sheets. One is a single 8.5x11" page in black and white titled "PS2 ModChip Installation Instructions" that details removing and replacing the cover and laser unit. If anyone happens to have this sort of document in a text file, a key phrase that you might search for is "Step 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 are only necessary if your PS2 is". The other sheet is a larger glossy page with color diagrams showing the 8 wire connection points for SCPH 30001 board types 1 2 and 3, as well as a short section on how to use the modded system with sections like so:
How to use your PS2 ModChip:
PS2Originals and PSX Originals:
Method 3 (only for US PS2, no Game Shark 2 is needed for this method):
This page also includes a (now defunct) url of http://www.modchip.com/ps2/directions.htm as a place to locate patches needed when using boot methods that involve holding in the power button.
If anyone can help me identify this chip I would most appreciate it. Further information regarding its (lack of) forward compatibility with newer console models would also be appreciated, as would links to updated directions if it will work.
