ok, I have just spent the last few days reading as many posts and threads as I could trying to learn as much as possible about installing a modchip(and I have found a lot of info from here ) and i didn't want to have to ask any silly or stupid questions, but after reading the posts here and other places on the net, I get conflicting recommendations.

So can some one please tell me :-

what types of solder can you use when installing a modchip ?

some people say silver ? some people say lead ? some say lead free ??

I know it has to be thin something like 1mm or less

any help would be much appreciated....

    regards

hmmm, if you have NO SOLDERING experience whatsoever, ps2 is not a good way to test your skills. It's very difficult to try to install a modchip and chances are you might mess up if you are not expose to some soldering before with little points. If you look at the diagrams, the point might seem big but they are pretty small. I would becareful if I were you.

    Anyways, get this though: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...13&site=search

I use it and it works great.

Use led based solder for best results.
Ledfree is mutch more difficult to make good solderings with.

Make sure that the solder contanes flux.
It's a cemical substanse that makes soldering more easy.
It could be a good thing to buy just some flux and dip the
end of the cable just before soldering
    And use a thin solder.

If u buy a solder that clames to be a "no clean" solder, you dont have to clean the solderpoints after soldering otherwise use water or some cleaning substance (not to strong).
If u dont, the solder "leftovers" can destroy your soldering in time.

    thanks for the replies,

T07N - I do have some soldering experience (has not been for a while mind and was on larger PCBs) but even the most experienced installer has had to start at some point
and I aint gonna just take my own ps2 apart and start soldering all over the place,
Im going to have a few practise runs first

like I said the reason I asked about the solder was because that someone recommend lead free to me and alot of members on here like yourself say silver..

just to ask another question the solder you linked to at radio shack does that contain LEAD aswell as silver ?

retro - many thanks for the input aswell !!!

    cheers guys
