I have a v7 magic 3.1 ps2. It boots backups fine when I have it stationed at my house for a long period of time, but as soon as I transport it, it gets annoyed at other people's houses and gets cranky about booting backups, anyone else notice this?

Your wires may be bobbing about and then short at the ends under compression - something like that.
what I would do is lengthen the wire in terms of the part you strip off just a little bit of the wire a bit more then resolder it, tape down all the wires with that thin electrical tape or use hot glue, it should grab a better hold on the solder points if using flux also
The problem might be that the wires are stripped TOO LONG and they are not lying flat along the mainboard. If they are thus un the air, when the case is on they come under compression. You may have been lucky up to now but after moving the PS2 the compression caused the stripped ends to touch.
It's a possibility. The stripped ends should be very short to prevent that happening and the wires should run flat on the mainboard so no compression effects can occur.
It was installed by Freedomlives.com , the very best installers in the Midwest and probably amongst the best in the US. I don't think he'd leave the wires compressed like that, but I could be wrong.....
I seemed to think it was more of a laser issue, usually the ps2 laser makes a slight reading sound to identify the media when i boot it up, and it didn't seem to be doing that at my friend's the other day. o well, we'll see if its fixed when i get over there tonight.
Bill would do a fine job. Remember I'm blind here - you're the one with the PS2 and the problem; your written description is all I've got to go on. And you haven't said much.
So back to you. Open it up and take a look please.
but if its not the wires after you open it up try dusting the board and clean the fan, dont use a feather duster but the air duster in the can. so many people have their ps2 in dusty enviroments and never really check to see how much got suck into the console, that is untill all that dust short out their ps2.
yeah, after i turned diagnosis on over at a friend's house, it started booting better, just boots them slower. Thanks!
