Here is my picture of the recommended Magic 2 mounting position. We couldn't find anywhere inside the case. Please note the following:

1 You MUST screw the metal case down fully in order to engage the heat sink for the Emotion Engine and the DVD servo chips. If you don't the PS2 will break down withinminutes.

2 The Magic 2 is mounted chip side onto the metal case. This helps dissipate heat from the large IC.

3 The Magic 2 is secured by putting double sided sticky tape onto the large IC. It won't fall off but if it does it has nowhere to go.

4 If you need to get to the laser unit for any reason (highly unlikely), then you can just take the Magic 2 off the side and re-stick it later.

Isn't it sickening though - the modded system worked first time!

Charlie, In your V5 install guide, you had the Magic 2 mounted to the top of the board, that?s what I did with the Magic 2 Adhesive bottom. I don't think its going anywhere now. The EE is on the other side of the board, but the metal case doesn't screw down all the way. DO I need to relocate it? Have any suggestions how to remove the magic 2 from the board, can I lengthen the wires without having to resolder everything?

The original v5 Magic 2 was a tight squeeze but it fitted in the motherboard location. I'll be revising the guide at the weekend to advise locating the Magic 2 as per v7 in case of difficulty.

We had to remove the double sided tape that was in place and put really thin stuff. We were sure that on putting the case back, there was no undue pressure but it was a tight fit.

The newer v5Magic 2 has a thicker form factor and it won't go there. So it needs to go as per the picture above. You can happily lengthen the wires. We did that for the Magic 2 because we had a Messiah in there before and the different orientation meant lengthening the BIOS wires. Just snip them in the middle, put some rubber sleeving on one end; bare the ends; solder join the ends; cover with the rubber sleeving. No big deal.

Mr. magic 2 told me that his chip was not sensitive to wire length.

Let us know how you do.

Not that I am noting anything new here, but in my installs, I used heat shrink to cover the wires. That way, nothing ever moves out of place.

I will be mod'ing my US v7 PS2 next week with the gold pcb Magic 2, but I don't know if I need to solder the Z point for my GameShark v2.0. I'd hate to put everything back together, then find out GameShark doesn't work, then go back in and solder the Z point.

Does anyone have experience on this? Perhaps I should solder Z point regardless?

By putting the Magic 2 on the metal cage it is easy to disconnect the Z point if something goes wrong. (You'd insulate it after disconnexion).

There are anecdotes of Z causing DVD movie side effects.

    So there's your advice.

    Charlie,

Just got my A04 this week and some new Princos should be here next week---THANK GOD!!! A bit nervous about doing the BIOS Soldering, but this @#$@#$ no-solder swap-mod is driving me NUTS!!!!

Thinking about going M2 with the clip, but from the few pictures I've seen, it looks like it might still be a bit tricky getting that aligned with the BIOS points as well. Any thoughts on success rate with these yet, or should I just grit my teeth and try the direct solder?

Also, where would you put the M2 after increasing it's size with the wrap-around clip that goes on it as well?

    Thanks!

    Raist
If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

Raistlin, I haven't considered the clip so can't advise where it might go!

Anyway I don't recommend the clip for the reasons you understand. Give it to a pro to do!

Yesterday I opened up my unit and I found that the magic Chip II were putted at the rightside of the cd tray (upside the metal case), so the chip was sticked at the side of the plastic body of the cd player, will it heats up more faster ? I find that it's difficult to move it to another place
