I wouldn't normally consider a modchip but i remembered I have a spare, opened PS2 around that is just gathering dust.
Is there such a thing as a reliable, easy to install modchip?

Yes and No,Theres two very relible chips out there called Matrix Infinity and Crystal Chip, but like most chips arent easy to install,I higly recomend a installer to install it for you.
Also you will probebly find some other sites saying the no solder DM$ Ezi is a reliable and easy to install chip, but I Highly recomend you stay as far away from it as possible,It WILL KILL your ps2,just search the forum if you dont believe me.

It doesn't get any easier than what we have availible to us now.
I'll have to find an installer then, that also happens to fix disc read error problems
A temporary fix for dre is cleaning and adjusting the pot but later on the laser will die out anyways.
