Moded PS2 V5

How could it be that i need to adjust the laser on my PS2 when i have got a chip solded in ? But when i had a non solder chip in it all my DVD-R Backupps worked fine all the time.
Is here someone that now this ?

i got a magic 3.1, it did not read my dvd-r at all, but some it start then it stop loading, i did not had this problem whit my no solder ship in the same ps2, now i have calubrated my laser so it read my backupps but it could be interesting to now why it is like this
