What are the drawbacks when using modchips?
what kind of draw backs are you wondering about?
No real draw-backs, but most of the time only extra-features.
Some are incompatible to FMCB (but it is not necessary to have, if you have a chip,... But people love the OSD.).
Some chips also interfere with programms, for example the MI/MI-Clones with USBA, if Macrovision is on.
Bad for those with an old MI-Clone, where this couldn´t be changed.
Another thing is the online-thingy. You need to disable your chip (if it doesn´t do it on its own) if you want to play with an original online, or you need to patch it before burning.
Some other things, but you´re good if your chip can be disabled.
none really, except you can't play online unless you have the crystal chip.
The biggest drawback is actually human error during installation.
If you get it done by someone who is sloppy, or you plan to do it yourself and it is your first time soldering, then all kinds of problems can happen.
Problems range from common problems due to poor grounding of the chip to weird hard to explain stuff.
Last of all your PS2 can never be sold to someone who cares about if it has been opened or not.
FMCB has none of these problems, but it does have it's own set of caveats.
