If I have a non-D M S modchip, is it possible to boot to HDloader on HD? Or do I have to go through the MC exploit everytime?

No. with a crystal chip or matrix infinity you can boot hdloader from your memory card without the exploit. you can also configure it to boot directly by holding down a button while booting up your ps2
