I intend to install a Modbo 760 chip into my slim PS2 soon. I've two questions:

    - The direct PCB soldering kind of scares me. Has anyone experience with this; should I use wires instead, even though the chip is not designed that way?

    - Is there a config menu for this chip? I have heard that Matrix Infinities and some Modbos have menus accessible by Triangle + Circle. I think there is a "Modbo Chip" logo which comes up in the place of PS2 boot-up and shut-down. I would like to remove this.

    Thanks.

If you are unsure about it, I would suggest installing a modbo 745 or a modbo 4.0. they rely on wired installs solely.

Also, to access the config menu on any of them, you'll need to press and hold triangle and circle on the controller while powering on the system. the same for any matrix clone. but why hassle with soldering when FMCB is almost as good as a chip on running games. it only lacks ps1 backup compatibility really. that is the only feature the mod chip still holds over FMCB.

I can't find too many sites selling Modbo 745s though; perhaps you could direct me to one Bootlegninja?

Also I'm wondering if you access the Modbo menu and turn off the boot logo does it restore the normal Sony PS2 sequence or does it skip the boot logo altogether?

What would be your favourite budget PS2 modchip?

I personally don't like budget chips. quality can be sketchy on them some times. personally, I have a genuine matrix. but if I were to either hard or soft mod these days, I would opt for the soft mod. zero risk to it and it's superior in most ways to a hard mod now. as mentioned, the only thing a hard mod can do now over the soft mod is not directly play ps1 backups.

but if you are to get a budget chip, get a modbo 4.0. they are still fairly common.

I think I'd prefer a hard mod. I don't like goofing around with swapping discs plus there's laser exposure to worry about.

the answer is yes, you can skip the chp logo. but usually will go into the normal logo unless you boot directly into dev1 or dev2

    Thanks.

I'm working with a SCPH-75003 (PAL) here. It's necessary to remove the laser assembly, yes? To safely remove the screws from the bottom metal component? Removing/replacing the ribbon cable to the laser is a bit difficult.

    Disassembly instructions are pretty scant.

For example, are there improvements on this around.

    EDIT: Actually this isn't bad.
