I have had two new slims this past week that have the same laser assembly in them SPU3170 J after modding the lasers just grind, and machine will not boot. Once I change the laser to a different model machines work fine. What is up with that? Any ideas?

Guys this is no joke I mod a lot of slims and this particular model of lazer when modded does not work in any ver. board 12-14, I have tested multiple boards, chips, and laser units and this problem is fact. The only constant in my testing is I only have DMS 4 lite and lite S.E. chips, so unless they are the problem with this particular laser model then I think they have done something with the lasers, as crazy as that sounds. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It is a big problem, in my area all the stores now have this new laser in them. I am not sure what to do. Any ideas? Can anyone confirm a working SPU3170 J laser and any mod chip in a slim?

Interesting, I contacted DMS about a week ago, but no response, big surprise! They are pretty much a mickey mouse outfit. Any possible reason why it would be the DMS chips?

i have modded a lot of pstwo's and also lots of them had the SPU3170
it is true that it is not a real great quality laser but never experienced that they died due of a modchip

what i have seen manny times on repairs is that when the laser ribbon is not good in to the connector of the laser it does not run well or can even short out

this is perhaps where you have to look for your problem
guaranteed it is not the Modchip

The lasers are not dying, they just simply do not work with the chip, when powered up the rail motor just makes a grinding noise, when trying to initialize, disk or no disk in the machine. Then when put in a un-chipped machine they work fine and when different model laser put in moddem machine it works fine. Also make note the problem laser in question are SPU3170-J, and look quite different then previous models. I cannot believe no one else has experienced this.
