mod chip suggestions?

someone came into my store today and wanted me to mod his PS2 so he could play Japanese games and movies on it. he's not interested in playing any backups. all he wants is to be able to play Jap games and movies (originals).

what chip is good for this? I'd prefer one that doesn't need any swap tricks of any kind. just put the game or movie in and you're good to go.

Magic 3.1 If you can find one. I know they play both and They are about $15. If this is his only intention.

and thiers no special boot procedures need for this chip?

Always.....Unless you go to a magic V. Then It will boot from browser. The boot procedure is very easy with the Magic 3.1.

A mod should know this.. but JAP games are ntsc.. original Japs work on a USA version ps2.. you do not need a modchip to play original JAP originals.. Your customer might have " hong kong pressed games " which are backups.. i suggest a Magic V if he has a v5-8.. Messiah 2 if he has a version 1-4... dms3 if he has a v9/10. hope this helps PP

Net US games are also NTSC. He will NOT be able to play movies with just a mod chip. Japan is region 2 US is region 1. He will need something like an all region disc. I have a US V4R with a3.1 and it LOVES my import of Initial D Special Stage. Also i think i booted my friends copy of Dragonball GT once. Chip is a joy to use and very simple. Just single tap of reset for ps2 boot (if you really need to sometimes works with just insert if you get it on boot).

Just put in a DMS3 it is likely that at some point he'll want to test the capabilities of his new chip and play some copies and DMS3 would be best for that! I would normally agree with N£TM£ÇH but i just really dont like magic chips!

Alternatively you could just give this guy a DVD Region X!

I never knew you could play JAP originals on a US syatem (I don't play JAP games so nevr tried)

he didn't say anything about playing backups so I'm not going to set his system up to play them if I can avoid it.


I think I'll just get a DVD region X for him and sell it for a small profit.

DVD-R movies of the same region as the ps2 work on it too... without a mod.. They did before i had any chip in mine anyway!

Whoa there no no no, you cannot play japanese games in stock US ps2. Region lockout will kill the boot in it's tracks. It must be modded. Believe me I have Japanese imports.
