I'm looking to mod my PS2 in the near future, but I don't have a clue on how the whole process works! I know nothing about mod chips or anything that revolves around them. I've been interested in getting one for awhile now, but haven't bothered until I saw a article in my local newspaper. A place called "CANMOD". I noticed on their site they have two chips: Magic V 50K($35) and Magic 3.1($25). Could someone give me a quick explanation on the quality of these two chips, and how do they compare to other chips on the market?

In a e-mail I received from "CANMOD", the guy told me, "So the cost of the chip is 35 for a v9 ps2 and 25 for v7 and down then it would be 65 for the install. So depending on the version it will be around 90 or 100 dollars." The prices are Canadian as well. What exactly is a v9 and v7? Does the model of my PS2 come into play when getting a chip installed, I currently own the model SCPH-39010.

As you can tell, I really don't have any knowledge on modchips, but if someone could answer a few of my questions, it would help considerably, since I have many more questions to come.

    Thanks
    Phill

You have a v7, but I wouldn't buy the magic 3.1. It isn't the most reliable of chips. Get a Duo from www.foundmy.com for $21 USD. Find out if canmod will install the Duo if you supply the chip.

All right, I'll be sure to do so. So is v7 another name for the chip(Magic 3.1), or the model of the PS2?

As well, what's considered the best chip out there?

    Thank You

'v7' stands for 'Version 7', which is the version of your Sony(R) Playstation(R) 2.
The best chips for your version are Messiah 2 and DMS3, though DMS3 is updatable and has more features, so go for that.

Festering, your PS2 is a version 7, which means practically all modchips available now will work with it. The Messiah 2, MXL2, DMS3, Magic 3.1, Magic V, Apple 2 Pro, etc. with the DUOs, Magics and Apple 2s being the cheapest. But I do agree with bighap that the Magic 3.1s aren't that good, they're obsolete, steer away from these no matter how cheap.
The DMS3 do seem to be the best out there but they're also expensive and if you don't need its additional features, you're basically just wasting your money. It's best to visit www.foundmy.com and compare the features for yourself.
