Messiah2 reads DVD-R but not originals
Messiah2 reads DVD-R but not originals –

I have my v7 PS2 modded with a messiah2.
It loads DVD-Rs and CDRs just fine. But it doesn't seem to like the originals! It gives me the RSOD every time. If I start the machine disabling the chip, it will load them fine, though.
Any thoughts? Ideas? Experiences??
Thanks,
Ralfo.

Please check wires R & W.

I will do that; thanks Charlie.
What are R and W for? Weird that the DVDRs and CDRs work fine(?!)
Thanks,
Ralfo.

if all connections are correct, the only possibility is that it's not messiah2 at all

On reflexion, it won't be R&W. They are the BIOS Enable lines. Hyper_megaman has a point. When the groove is found, it goes straight to the disk type check. If the disk is an original of the same region as encoded in the PS2 firmware, then it should boot right away - the Messiah 2 has nothing to do.
if there is SCEx type noise, perhaps that causes an entry point into Messiah 2 code and that could be the problem. So look at that; check also the CD/DVD Controller wires - if they are wrong usually backups don't boot; but swapped round - who knows?
I've not seen this befoe.

I'll check SCEx. Funny that it happened to the two installs I did.
Thanks,
Ralfo.

That's new info. Two installs. Tell us more - in detail. About the PS2s, the chips, install method - exactly as per the install guide? Wires flat along the motherboard? In the exemplar location?

Yes; two installs. It's weird, but this is all I know:
I chipped my ps2. It worked fine, didn't have this issue.
Then my brother in law asked me to mod his. Well, he lives far away, so when I visited I took my ps2, and just swapped the motherboards (his was a v7 also).
When we tried his ps2, with my mobo, it started behaving like this. So what we did was this. We switched the mobos back, and I brought his ps2 home. He kept mine, as it worked fine.
I modded his with another messiah2. And got the same problem.
So it is two installs in two different mother boards; but with the same laser/psu.
I'm going to try de-soldering SCEx from the mobo and see if I can boot originals (I should be able, right?)
Thanks,
Ralfo.

To disable SCEx in the messiah, I should solder it to GND, right?
I'll try that
