I'm not sure whether my ps2 is a v5 or v6 but the messiah 2 installation guide by charlie_ps2 was the same for both versions so I assume that it doesn't really matter. Or does it?
I installed the modchip using a WLC100 Weller soldering station with a 0.79mm tip--it was the smallest I could find at one local electronics store, I don't know if there is a smaller bit available for the said soldering station. I guess I'll look at other electronics stores.
After installation, I tested the ps2 and the results were:
psx backup--works with color problem, have to implement color fix
ps2 dvd original--works
ps2 cd backup--does not work; with messiah on->I hear a few clicks, the typical ps2 loading sound and then no activity at a black screen; with messiah off->red screen (Ico), reads the cd as audio cd (Dynasty Warrior 2).
I backed up Ico and Dynasty Warrior 2 by creating an image to HD in cdrwin and then later burning those image on a cdrw (both phases in maximum speed--48x read for image & 4x write to cdrw) then I did a disc copy of both cdrws on Cursor (colored) 80 minute cds with Nero 18.104.22.168 at 4x.
So based on these facts, is it a mis-installed modchip or is it a problem with the backup method or medium?
