messiah 2 troubles –
04-22-2003,11:17 AM
I recently purchased a V5 PS2 which has the Messiah 2 chip installed which worked great for the past owner, but ever since I received it I am having trouble getting my backups and dvd movies to load.
The system boots PS2 and PSX original games without trouble and no special loading sequence is needed.
If I use the special loading sequence for the PSX game it will boot, but the graphics are a bit off for some reason (ie the PS logo is much lighter and less crisp).
If I try loading a DVD movie the system will stay at the screen where you can select either the browser or system config. The same thing happens when I try to load a PS2 dvd-r backup.
If I try to boot a PS2 cd-r backup then I receive the red screen of death.
Since I use swap magic disks on my other system, I tried loading both the cd and dvd versions and oddly enough the cd version loaded and the dvd just hung at the same screen dvd movies hang.
I think the PS2 is in working order, I was able to play regular PS2 games fine and everything booted right away. The system can boot cd?s and ps2 originals so I don?t think it is a problem with the laser. If I had to take a guess I would say maybe one of the soldering points came loose during shipping, but then again I?m no expert and that is why I?m asking you guys what you think might be up with this machine. Also what do you think I should do with this system? I?ve never soldered before, but if it is just to reattach a wire I think I could handle it. What do you guys think I should do?

Forgive my cynicism but did you see the Messiah 2 chip booting backups before you bought the v5 or did you believe the guy?
It could be the soldering points come away or any of the cuases described in the Troubleshooting section of the Install guide.

No I did not actually see the ps2 booting backups. I received it in a trade with someone who had estalished a list of positive references on a reputable board. I do think the chip is actually in there, I was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar and if there were any solder points in particular that I might want to check out if I do go opening this thing up.

By reference to the install guide posted in the FAQ section of the forum and what you see when you open it up, you shoud be able to form an opinion as to whether or not it is installed correctly.

sorry to say if it was packaged right the chances of a wire coming loose is slim. i had a chip install that i sent my v7 board to the UK and i am from buffalo,ny. and it came back fine.
the board forum my be reputable but not all members are.

Ok so I got around to opening up the ps2 today and I took several pictures of what I found. I read through charlie's install guide and all the correct points seem to be soldered. Now that I think about it, the wire coming loose in shipping does seem a bit unlikely. Has anyone experienced something similar, I do not know what I should do with this ps2.

you say the psx logo is lighter? sounds like it needs colorfix wire...i had same thing happen to me on a messiah2 install..soldred the colorfix wire, now its fine. as far as the rest is concerned, double check that all p oints are correct and that he didn't switch any.

after looking at the board really closely, I think my 'W' point may be in the wrong position
as seen here
here is an install done the right way:
ckt's messiah 2 v5 install
There is solder in the correct position, but the wire was moved to another position for some reason...ckt's 'W' point is in the correct position mine is not. Any idea why this person would resolder this thing in the wrong place?
