Messiah 2 booting prob.
I'm having probs booting dvdrips on my newly installed ps2 with the M2 Pro.
During my install, I fitted most of the connections with ease, except for ofcourse, the SCEx. Following some suggestions, I made the bond on the capacitor in series with the SCEx resistor instead. Now my modded ps2 boots psx originals. It will boot psx copies in psx mode. It doesn't boot dvdrips at all. I keep on getting the RSOD. I haven't tested original dvd games and dvdrs. The ps2 plays dvd movies fine.
I checked, double checked, tripple checked, you get the idea, but i can't find anything wrong with my soldering. The source and gnd connections are fine. I checked the voltage with the ps2 turned on.
I suspected that it might be the cd media that I was using is bad so I went out an bought another kind. I've tried, in total, 5 dvdrips but none of them boot. I even tried 3 different burning programs. Nero, Alcohol and CDRWin.
This trouble shooting is driving me crazy. Please help.
It seems to me that you don't have any backups other than DVD rips. if you do, then presumably they play in which case the DVD rips must be suspect.
If not then it's either a mis-install, esp. on A-I, or the rips are not in good shape for booting. Like not properly made or something.
I've just finished continuity checking all of my soldered connections. Specifically, I checked every MNOP bios legs and wires for continuity and verified by the continuity tester that each leg is not touching its neighbour. I am positive that all of the connections are in the right places. The only thing about the soldering that I am not completely sure of is the existence of cold connections. I've made an attempt at checking for continuity at the glob of solder in order to find cold connections. I'm not sure if that's the correct method.
You're right. I don't have my hands on any dvdr backups or original dvd games. I will try to get some tomorrow. The thing is, I'm planning to get my dvd burner soon so I don't want to waste any more money on buying dvdr backups. I will probably just get the dvd burner now and make my own backups instead.
The thing that is leading me to believe that it's a problem with either the modchip being defective or my soldering being lousy is that psx copied games boot but only in psx mode. It doesn't boot the regular way where you just press reset once. If my modchip was in perfect working condition then wouldn't the psx backup boot by pressing reset and not having the console being forced into psx mode? As I have stated above, I've tried many dvdrips with different media. They can't be all bad, can they? Or could it be a problem with my burner. Are there issues with certain burners not being able to burn ps2 images?
If the modchip (m2 pro) is faulty then how do I verify this? Is there some built-in diagnostic function in the M2 Pro? If it is really defective then what's the chance of me being able to return it for another? What's the practice in the community? Do chip resellers accept return of their defective products? I bought my M2 Pro from www.foundmy.com.
I'm running out of ideas here.
I forgot to add that instead of following your advice, in your M2 in v7 install faq, to solder the SCEx to the resistor, I bonded it to the capacitor. Is this ok? Will that connection be good enough or do I need to bridge the capacitor to the resistor? Some people have advised me to do so. You should be the authority on this matter so I will respect your input. Another thing, if the ps2 boots psx copies then the SCEx should be ok?
I got this from the product description of the M2 Pro on www.foundmy.com.

According to this description, ps1 backups are suppose to boot directly when inserted into the modded console? If so then when would you need the service of the ps1 mode?
"boot directly" means no-swap and doesn't have anything to do with any of the particular "modes". If you are familiar with earlier chips, they required a disk swap to get some media to boot. That is why direct boot simply means no disk swap, not the mode. Every chip on the market today requires different modes to operate properly on different disks meant for different playstation platforms. You have to tell the modchip that you are going to play a PSX disk by putting it into PSX mode (ie. holding reset button till blue light comes on). Likewise, you have to tell the console that you are going to play a PS2 disk by just tapping reset (because the default mode on startup is PS2 so no special mode switching tricks are necessary). Once you have started up the console in a particular mode, you can direct boot any disk of similar platform without switching modes. To switch modes, you need to either power cycle the console or hold reset button to go into standy (standby cycle) and then restart the console in the desired mode. For example, if you started up the console in PSX mode, you can change disks without actually having to power cycle or standby cycle the console as long as any subsequent disks are of the PSX platform. If you want to go from playing a PSX game to a PS2 game, you need to power cycle or standby cycle the console to switch to PS2 mode. Likewise, if you are playing a PS2 title and want to switch to a PSx title, you will need to power cycle or standby cycle the console and then put the console into PSX mode by holding the reset button until the blue light comes on.
I think your DVD rip problem is bad rips.....it would seem as if everything else is functioning normally according to your description.
Thanks for the reply meyousikmann. I'll will have to get myself a tested working dvdrip to try out. Hopefully it's the dvdrip that is problematic.
I have another question. When I put the console in ps1 mode, ps1 backups and ps1 originals play but with the screen shaking profusely ( similar to very low refresh rates ). Is this the normal behaviour when playing backups or is it due to me break some component when I installed the chip? Note that I solder the NTSC fix point on the underside of the motherboard. Could this be the problem?
This is an update on my trouble shooting. The following boots/runs:
- ps2 original dvd game (FFX)
- ps1 originals
- ps1 backups (with screen flicker)
Just bought myself a Pioneer 105. Firmware version 1.3. Winxp automatically detected and intalled the drivers. I tried burning a rip of Dynasty Warrior 4 dvdrip in DAO mode at 4x using Nero 188.8.131.52 on a Harmony silver top cdr. The system still will not boot dvdrips burnt using my new drive. I will try ps2 dvd backups tomorrow.
Does any one have a clue on what could possibly be wrong with my installation?
Hi, I recently received my pre modded PS2 the other day and I, too, am receiving the same problem. While backup CD-R's work fine, I have trouble loading DVD-R backups. It makes a clicking noise and it is unable to read. Here is the thread I posted.
This time I burned Onimusha 2 onto a Ritek 4x certified dvd-r using the above mentioned Pioneer 105 at only 2x. I'm getting RSOD when trying to boot this dvd-r backup. So the situation so far:
- Ps2 originals
- Ps1 originals
- Ps1 backups ( with an obvious screen flicker )
- Dvd movies
Will not boot:
- Ps2 dvd-r backups
- Ps2 dvd rips
Could some one give me pointers as to what I should check in order to trouble shoot my M2 Pro installation. I have very carefully gone through all the soldered connections and made sure that there are no splashes or bridges. What is the likelyhood of the M2 Pro itself being defective? Since the console is booting ps1 backups I can assume that it is working (no matter how little). Where should I pay particular attention to if all other media formats failed except for cdr backups of the original ps1 games.
