Well, over the weekend I installed a green Magic 7 clone into my V7 machine.

At first, I was using the "Magic Bios Clip" which worked VERY poorly.

I played with the clip for a while to get it to sit properly, but just couldn't get it to work.

I threw the clip in the garbabe and then soldered the points directly to the board.

Now the unit is HALF DEAD.

I revmoved all of my soldering and it is still HALF DEAD.

HALF DEAD = front lights/buttons work, but no startup SONY screen.

I've searched long and hard for bridges on the BIOS chip but haven't found any.

    1) Any other suggestions?

    2) I've heard reference to a 'controller' IC. Is this the same as the BIOS chip?

    3) I've measured 39ohms between the 3.3V rail and GND. Can someone verify that this is right? (It seems really small).

    4) When testing the motherboard, can I NOT connect the laser/cd assembly and still get the SONY screen at turn on? (Just wanna do some probing).

    Much thanks in advance,
    kgn340

    Thanks.

I'm gonna see about getting a replacement Ps2. I cleaned and cleaned. Verified with a 30X magnifier. Cleaned some more. Verified, cleaned, ad nauseum (believe me, i was sick).

The Magic2 clone I have is from Easybuy (I wish I would have known about clones before I bought). I'm kinda nervous about using it in another install just in case IT damaged the bios.

The other possibility is the lousy BIOS CLIP. I might have pushed too hard on the clip and damaged the internals of the BIOS chip.

I think the moral of the story is: Don't use BIOS clips.

    Oh, well. Live and learn.

The clip was from modchip.ca. Great service, just the clip sucks.

I completely backed out of the install. Wiped the whole board clean. Used compressed air. Carefully examined all legs of the BIOS, etc. I'm pretty sure the chip is toast.

I was going to check it with an o-silly-scope, but I'm gonna see if I can just get it replaced.

    *sigh*
