Matrix Infinity and Me

Recently I have become bored with my PC, World of Warcraft, and the other time sinks I have devoted so much of my time to in the past 10 years of PC's and online gaming. I have 2 kids, both around 4 - 6 years old, and have purchased a PS2 with a Matrix Infinity chip pre-installed, in hopes that I can not only play current PS2 and older PS1 games, but also a way to play old school Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega, you name it, games.

Actually, it may be easier to list my questions in order, so a veteran to this can find exactly what I am looking for...

I have a new PS2, modded with the newest Matrix Infinity. Some of these questions may sound stupid to a community that has been modding PS2's since release, but bare with me ;)

1) If I wanted to play Nintendo emulated games, or Nintendo 64, atari, sega, etc, can this be done, and where do I look for these? Do they load on a disk, or since they are so small in size, a large memory card? Just information on where to get these old time classics ;)

2) the DVD's I have (for PS2 game burning) are Sony DVD+R disks. Is there a specific disk that works better? or a speed that is best to burn your back-ups at? DVD+R burning, vs DVD-R burning? Using DVD-RW's or +RW's? My computer is pretty beefy that I will be burning on (x2 4600 dual core, 4 gigs dual chan 400 ram, raid 0 raptor scsi drives, 1900xtx 512 graphic card, etc) so I am wondering if people are burning at lower speeds, because their computers buffers can't handle a higher burn rate?

3) Will I be able to play PAL games, or should I stear clear of them and stick with NTSC.

4) besides playing backed up games, and emulators (if emulators are out there for PS2) what else are people using their modded PS2's for? I like to push the limits with techology, but simply don't know where to start in the PS2 world. Been playing on computers for to long :(

2. Buy some Taiyo Yuden dvd-r.

3. Yes you can play PAL games.

4. emulators are pretty slow on ps3. They perform better on Xbox.

You should buy an Xbox if you want to play the old school games.

I will buy them, if they are the best, but will Sony DVD+R's work? What is the draw-back of using them.

yeah the ps2 is not that good at playing emulators.. mainly because its played off of discs while the xbox is more of a pc and plays off the harddrive.

Really? As far as I know the reason why most people don't use a PS2 for emulators is because none of them are as good as the ones on xbox. The main reason for that is it's much easier to code on an xbox (like programming for windows). Also, because the creators of most of the ps2 emulators didn't release the source code, so no new programmers can update the code. I can run SNES-Statation, PGEN, and InfoNES off the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) fine, I just don't use them because they are no where near as good as I would want them to be...

EDIT: Sorry, I know you already mentioned the part about the xbox emulators being better then the ps2 emulators, but I just wanted to point out that you can indeed play the ps2 emulators off the HDD and also re-inforce the difference between the xbox and ps2 emulators.

can the matrix infinity play DVD +R media? every website that i look does not mention this feature?

yes it can play DVD+R fine, altough i believe DVD-R gives a slightly better performance overall.

u may want to read a tutorial i have written after i understood the basics of ps2 backup, copying, playing with emu's and making PS2 boot disks. I wrote this specialy for matrix infinity users, but everyone can learn a lot from it :)

i found in my experience that + media plays better, when i used - media the laser was having a hard time to read them and this was on a slim but as soon as i changed to + media the laser was more quiet. IMO.
