I have done searches at ISONews and here and cannot find a solution to this problem. It seems that a few people at ISONews have a similar problem, and no one has been helpful so far. Hopefully someone here can offer a helpful answer. Here's the deal:

    What I have: Magic 2 V7 Green Clone in a V7 US/NTSC PS2 (SCPH-39001)

My problem: DVD-R's load rarely or never. I have gotten one Optodisc DVD-R game to load once (could not reproduce results) and one Apple DVD-R game to load once (could not reproduce results).

Media used: Optodiscs and Apples, burned at 1x using PrimoDVD on a Pioneer A03 with 1.68/1.80/1.90 firmware.

Tested: All DVD-R's have been tested and working 100% on my V4 Messiah Modded PS2, my V4R Origa Modded PS2, and my friend's SCPH-15000 JPN Origa Modded PS2.

Wire gauge: 30 AWG on all points except for ground, which is either 22 or 24 AWG I believe.

I have heard conflicting solutions to the problem, ranging from making my Ground and Power wires thicker to adjusting the laser in different ways to the mod chip just being badly coded. I need to know if this is a mod chip issue, wire issue, or laser issue. My Magic 2 V7 clone was professionally installed by Bill of freedomlives. Any and all input would be extremely beneficial, as myself and several others on different forums seem to have a similar problem.

Please reply, and thanks in advance for all your help,
    fubarduck

Most would like to tell you that it is your laser, or the media, or the sotware you used to burn.....don't believe it. I know this is not what you want to hear but more and more people are starting to come forward with stories of major reliability problems with the Magic II. I also have a Magic II modded console and it does not function well at all. Sad truth is, the Magic is far from what it is advertised to be and nobody seems to want to acknowledge the fact....especially mr magic himself. Take it from me...I have tried it all. I even replaced my laser just to see if that would help. Nope. Nada. Zippo. Still doesn't boot discs that are known to boot on a Neo modded console. I think it is time people start admitting that the Magic is a pretty bad piece of hardware.

What green clone is it? Is it the kind that lik-sang sold, the kind that didn't say anything on them? Or was it the kind that said Magic 2 on them?

This might sound silly, but try another burn at 2x and see of your problems disappear.

I use Apple, Pioneer, and TDK exclusively on an A03 with PrimoDVD and noticed that even on good name-brand media I've had boot and loading problems with discs done at 1x. For some reason my Messiah modded v4-1A and Magic2 v1-0D seem to both prefer 2x over 1x...

Hey Balto, I appreciate your advice, but I hope you understand that I'm not about to re-burn 60 or 70 PS2 games to be compatible with my new PS2. I have two other PS2s that load the discs fine, so I would rather keep playing them on those. Indeed, it is my hunch that the Magic 2 (real AND clone) is just total crap. My most likely course of action now will be to wait until the new Messiah chip and accept the $120 or so I lost on a mod chip that doesn't work as advertised. These sorts of things happen in the mod chip scene.

Are there any other users of Magic 2 V7 Clone + a SCPH-39001 V7 NTSC PS2 that can verify the non-functionality of DVD-R discs after a professional intallation?

We've done quite a few reals and clones, and everything works first time. I think you need to ask LOD whether or not he tested his work with DVD-R - this should be your starting point.

There are clone versions of known crap quality and you have no control over that. Essentially looking at the clone would indicate its quality.

However as you've got it to work with DVD-R once, I'd suspect an intermittent joint that went brittle in transit. And, of course, you can go try cleaning the lens in case some sh*t got onto it.

One comment, we use 22 awg for power as well as ground (24 awg is fine for power) and we keep ground short to less than 3". That combination, as recorded in these forums, sorts a heck of a lot of problems out.

Yes, but have you installed the V7 clone on a V7 NTSC machine? Additionally, why would DVD-R's *sometimes* boot (I have gotten two games to boot in about 50 tries and could not reproduce the effects). Why would they boot at all if two wires were completely switched? Additionally, my chip was installed by freedomlives.com, a Web site that has installed probably 50-100 Magic 2 V7's already. I am not saying a wire crossing is impossible, but it is quite unlikely. Once again, I don't think the two successful DVD-R boots I got would have booted at all if any of the points were wrong.

Given these facts, do you still think crossed wires is a possibility? I certainly do not, but if you have good reason to believe otherwise, please let me know. This is one of the many conflicting explanations for DVD-R's not booting with my configurations, so I need to use some good process of elimination.

    Thanks, and please reply,

Thanks for the reply, Charile. I used to install many a PSX and PS2 modchip but quit a few months ago due to massive stress caused to me by it, so if you guys are pretty certain this is an installation problem, then I will take your word for it.

To psx-tech: Would you mind if I sent my PS2 to you so you could check it out and fix things up? If Charlie is right, then it is simply an issue of Power/Ground wires. How much would you charge? Could you guarantee functionality of DVD-R's (and everything else)? If so, I will happily box up this PS2 again and send it to you rather than having to go buy wires, open PS2, spend time figuring it out, etc. PM me and give me a quote and an E-Mail address to respond!

Thanks for everyone's help, and please keep posting,
