magic2 installation ??
magic2 installation ?? –

Basically, all I want to really know is, how hard is it exactly to install a magic2? i know, i know, most people say you need professional help, but the diagrams look pretty precise. I may not be the most experienced in soldering, but im pretty confident with using and handling the necessary tools to do this. im i missing something, is the ps2 board really that delicate, requiring a pro to do the job. i'm sure there are some people here who followed the directions and did it with little experience.
thanks, for ur time

My advice is if you are conifident that you can do it then open up your PS2 and physically look at the points you need to solder (preferably before you get the chip and you won't end up doing a hasty install). Perhaps practice on something cheaper then your PS2 for a bit. You'll still require the proper tools which will end up costing you as much as paying someone else to do it. Check your diagrams from many sources to verify the accuracy. Usually the people who sell the chip provide the proper diagrams.

and its true if you dont have experiance you will properly end up destrying parts like the bios or dvd controller
and your not the only person who trys to save money, not that im saying to save money, but they try it them selfs and end up bridging pins behind the bios or snappng legs
trust it isnt a pretty site to tell customers they've destroyed there ps2, the customer want to really take out on installers like its our fault bla....
get some pratice b4 you take on this big job, as they say practise makes perfect

The dvd ic points are the most difficult to install. It varys from model to model as well, but yeah it's hard.

That's the v5 Install guide in the link. The pads for the CD/DVD Controller are the "alternative" points.
With the tools and tips given in the Guide and patience, the v5 install is not too bad if you have soldered to a reasonable stndard before.
If you are not a reasonably skilled solderer, it will be challenging, less so if you take your time and use the recommended tools/wire gauges.

thanks for all the help. i have opened my ps2 up already, and i see where the most difficulty would be. i'd probably use razor blades, and a magnifying glass. anyone have tips for that?

I use about three different kinds of magnifing glasses. 2 of them are loupes (1@ 5x and 1@ 10x) and the other is a larger lower powered one. If you can find the loupe attached to eye glasses they are good and you can get a 'hands free' glass that sits on a stand above your project.
