I have the same problem except that mine's a V10 and it won't boot any back-up PS2 game (CD or DVD). Although, it'll boot PS1 games (backups too) just fine.
I'm lost, I figure it was the modchip but since it boots PS1 back-ups I'm not so sure anymore.
Any help would be appreciated.
The Magic V is a difficult chip to install. If you don't have modchip installation experience I would advise you to check over your work again. I'm guessing that your flaw is in the vias area.Originally Posted by WhatsAModchip?
Again, check your installation. There is a chance that the Magic V just crapped out on you guys. I've had that happened before but the chip isn't so stable to begin with so best luck to both of you.Originally Posted by Dabbler
I got my PS2 installed at a store but it closed down over a year ago. My PS2 worked fine for a year so I don't think there was an installation error by the store. Since it's only not working for PS2 backups (PS1 works fine) I'm guessing that the modchip is crapping out on me. Oh well, guess I'll just use the exploit and play off the hard-drive. Thank god it works for imports.
Thanks for the help T07N.
ill redo my vias, theres no way im going to install all those wires on my controller chip. ill get back to you guys. keep this thread updated if you can. thanks for all your help.
Yes I've had this problem with magic v on a v7 . Does it play dvd originals with the chip enabled or only when disabled ? Does it boot all discs when the chip is disabled ?
I had a magic v and the problem you are describing also was happening to me, I dont know if your problem is the same but with mine the chip was getting stuck in one mode, like ps2 or ps1 etc, I unplugged the power at the back for about 20 seconds and then plugged back in and it was fine again but it kept happening so i ripped it out and put in an Matrix. I think these magic v chips are a bit dodgy
if ps1 backups are playing, then the chip is almost certainly working ok.
ps1 backups only require the bios wires, and the SCEX point to work (AFAIK the dvd controller wires are not needed)
so check your dvd controller points (the via's on the backside of the board - the solder points are easily prone to coming undone)
I've actually opened up my PS2 and checked all of the wires. They're still soldered on and none of the wires are loose. Should I check if the solder points are...loose or something? Should I solder the points again to make sure?
BTW, original PS2 games play just fine with or without disabling the modchip. The strange thing is I had to enable PS1 mode to play original PS1 games. I've never had to do that before, original games would just boot up fine without enabling anything before.
