I just reopened my first magic 2 install to clean it up a little bit, I was having some misboots: red screen and browser while booting dvd-r. I shortened all wires as short as possible and now have had no problems booting anything no more red screens or browser. 100% succes with every boot!!!! Im sure u have all read Charlie_ps2's guide (the best guide out there) and u know about this but just wanna make sure it sticks.

    Short wires=More Stable install

P.S. I hooked up Z point on my magic II gold PCB with no underline and no GS boot (which i figured) but no problems with booting like others have reported, just wondering if i should leave it hooked up or remove it?

I will Post some Pics as soon as I get my dig cam werkin!!!

I left mine hooked up. I'm putting in a red V7 soon to see if it's fixed. We'll just whip the points off the Chip and put them onto the new chip. It's all fixed to the metal casing as per my guide.

I have a gold v7 underlined magic2 chip, for use on my US v5 (30001R) ps2, and I'm having the most terrible time getting it to work.

All my wires are three inches or less, 30ga for everything except power and ground, which are 20ga. I have a decent soldering skill and I'm convinced my joints are acceptable (I've redone the entire install like 6 or 7 times yesterday/today). I even have leads attached to the alternate points (S and W) so I could switch between them with ease.

The problem is that import ps2 originals will not work at all. Local ps2 originals and local ps2 backups work perfectly (I don't have a local/import psx original/backup or an import ps2 backup to try, so I don't know about them), regardless of the status of S and Z (they are connected now because disconnecting them didn't help). I have tried powering up / resetting / ejecting in just about every manner (including soft resetting many times, which someone said worked for them), but I still get the bloody red screen. The import ps2 original I'm trying is FFX International.

I'm not sure if I got a faulty magic2 chip (are all the underlined ones faulty?) because I don't have to disconnect S to get local ps2 backups to work (charlie_ps2 mentioned doing so fixes the ps2 backup problem on the faulty magic2 chips) or if there is a trick to getting imports to work. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

    Thanks!

mine is also 30001 R, FF X international original won't boot, the solution is burn that game into a new DVD backup, it'll boot, why the original won't boot ? it's something that I have thinking about these days

Sooo. Original imports don't work, period? Any word on if it's been fixed by china-magic?

I'm glad I just bought a dvd burner, because Lik-Sang has not responded to my emails re. getting a working replacement. Damnit.

Of course import originals boot. Who said that ALL don't boot? Only FF X International has been mentioned.

I have only FFX International to test... Since no one has come and said "Imports work on my V7 underline magic2," I'm not going to assume otherwise. So by "Of course import originals boot," do you mean to say you have been successful in booting import originals?

Also, if FFX International is the only one with problems, could it be that they are defective? Has anyone been able to use one (in any manner; on a jap console, modded, anything?) obtained from Lik-Sang? I noticed mine didn't come with the "afterword" movie dvd with which they were rumored to be packaged.

As you've only got FF X International you can't conclude that "original imports don't work, period". Someone else has confirmed a problem with that particular game so that's the only evidence around that an import original doesn't boot.

Import originals boot on my NTSC v7.

As to FF X International, I only have FF X (US version) so can't say for sure whether or not they are defective.

Anyway if you've got it working with a backup, you're in business.

Okay, this bites-- I just retested it with a local original (I only tested it with one on the first install, when backups didn't work, and it worked), and it doesn't work. So, now only backups work and no originals work. Would this be a laser issue or a W issue? W seems to be fine (I checked continuity), and when I disconnected 5V, 3.3V, and GND, normal operation resumed without any trouble, indicating the laser calibration was fine.

So, I'm stumped. I've checked and rechecked my solder joints, and can't seem to find a problem. I'll try switching to alternate points for W and S to see if it makes a difference.
