I have a ps2 version 7 with a Magic 3(blue). I was experiencing hanging on all the dvd games, backups and originals after a few minutes, the cd games (psx 1 original & backup cdr & ps2 original) did not hang. To ensure it was not a drive issue, I turned off the chip while booting the dvd game by pressing and holding the reset button for greater than 5 second about 10 second. When I did that the original dvd games did not hang after a few minutes. To make sure it's not a heat issue or a bridged solder, I resoldered the chip and relocated it to the side of the expansion bay. I used 22 gauge cable for the power 5v and the ground wire, 30 gauge cable for the rest. I installed a capacitor on the SCEX connection. However, I was experiencing the same problem.

What worked for me was unsoldering the Z wire. After that the hanging and freezing stopped and my game shark still works. I thought the z connection was for game shark/action replay support. I guess not. Now, everything boots perfect and the annoying hangs and freezes are gone.

Can anyone tell me if they also experienced this and what your solution was?

I am using tdk dvd-r. They work great and I never had a problem with it.

    Very interesting finding indeed!
I also just came across a similar solution - I used the PS1 method to boot the games that were freezing and locking up.

Alright guys - now this is only for the people that have issues with games locking up with the Magic3 installed - particularly DVD based games. I know I have been bitching about this for at least 2 weeks now but after playing around and trials and tribulations I think I may have stumbled across a solution.

    Try this:
Instead of just tapping RESET from STANDBY (Red light on) with the disc in the tray. Try holding RESET in until the BLUE light on the EJECT button comes ON. This is described to be the method used to boot PS1 games on the Magic3, but for some odd reason I use it to boot Kingdom Hearts and GTA Vice City and I have not gotten a lockup or freeze. Just to test I booted Kingdom Hearts and did the intro test. I would alternate between the method I just described and the standard method. Every time I tried the standard method with that game the intro would lock, whenever I used the PS1 boot method The intro would not lock.\

If you don't understand what I mean about the 2 booting methods, please email me and I'll try to explain better.

Please guys, try this method and post results!

Hey jy96, can you verify this method please? I have the same setup as you (Magic3 (blue), V7 USA NTSC). I thought nothing besides PS1 games would boot if u use the PS1 booting method. I tried booting PS2 CDR games with the PS1 booting method and it won't boot up. How can you boot up DVDR games with this booting method?

Anyone know if the new Apple Chip V7 is any good? Will it play DVD9 games? Does it boot up the game from the browser screen? Thanks

    Hmmm ....
Using the ps1 booting method on ps2 dvd games? I will give it a try on my copy of Kingdom Hearts.

Just tried it. Didn't work. It just prompted me to insert a Playstation 2 Disc.

Rockiller, the only thing that worked for me was to disconnect the z wire. You can try it but I don't guarentee anything. I don't know why this works.

I don't know why but it does work for me.. I'm just happy as hell my damn games don't lockup any more. Every time it would lock I'd get one step closer to smashing it against the wall. My PS1 copies and originals also boot using that method. I wonder if DVD-R copies will work using it now. I wish I could find out but my wife won't let me open my A05 till Xmas..

Yep, I have tried the alternative w. No luck. It would still hang up after a couple of minutes on all dvd games (original and backup). The only thing that seems to work is removing the z point, but the funny thing is I can still use my game shark.Weird.

I was so happy when I read that you guys had success unsoldering the z wire. But I just tried it, and my copy of kingdom hearts is froze on the screen right now
Using the method for PS1 on PS2 games works, and the game doesn't freeze, but only works for originals...
Hope someone comes up with a solution soon, or I'll have to get a messiah2.

PS: I tried magic3s on a v7 and a v3 and the same thing happens on both!!
