Magic 3 Hanging / Freezing - possible solution inside
Magic 3 Hanging / Freezing - possible solution inside –

Alright guys - now this is only for the people that have issues with games locking up with the Magic3 installed - particularly DVD based games. I know I have been bitching about this for at least 2 weeks now but after playing around and trials and tribulations I think I may have stumbled across a solution.
Try this:
Instead of just tapping RESET from STANDBY (Red light on) with the disc in the tray. Try holding RESET in until the BLUE light on the EJECT button comes ON. This is described to be the method used to boot PS1 games on the Magic3, but for some odd reason I use it to boot Kingdom Hearts and GTA Vice City and I have not gotten a lockup or freeze. Just to test I booted Kingdom Hearts and did the intro test. I would alternate between the method I just described and the standard method. Every time I tried the standard method with that game the intro would lock, whenever I used the PS1 boot method The intro would not lock.\
If you don't understand what I mean about the 2 booting methods, please email me and I'll try to explain better.
Please guys, try this method and post results!

I'll try when I get my ps2 back. It is weird that the ps1 method would even boot ps2 games though.

Yes, this method does work, as I posted somewhere else, but only for dvd originals, so it defeats the purpose of installing the modchip :I
Does someone know of a solution for this? I tried adding caps to the oscillator, and nothing.. Also tried removing the z point, and nothing..
Kingdom hearts is perfect for testing this, I just boot it up, and leave it going, it'll eventually freeze on the FMV.. if not the first time, the second time through.

I don't have any DVDr copies yet so I was not able to test that.. I have a shiny new A05 sitting in a box in the closet but my wife won't even let me look at it till Christmas..
You are right - this is not a solution but I sure am glad there is a way to play the original games freeze free - Someone must be able to identify the differences and why this is happening.. There is something between the 2 modes...

Yes, you are right, there must be something between the two modes, I checked, and in Ps1 mode (with no freezes) the modchip still gets hot, so that also serves as proof that this is not a heat problem.
I also convinced my wife to get a DVD (edit) burner for me for christmas, but, I bought it and installed it..
still a christmas present, but with no wait, hehehe....

Well then, either
A. Buy the original and support the creators and $ony.
B. Spend more $$$ to play that ONE game that consistenly freezes...

Joe Mama,
For
1. I do buy original games WORTH buying - that is obvious. Your statement is also very hypocritical - why would you be on these forums if you were concerned with buying games?
hypocrite
n : a person who professes beliefs and opinions that they do not hold
2. This is just a sign of problems to come if it is already having issues with these 2 games - Kingdom Hearts and GTA Vice City. Besides these aren't the only 2 games that are freezing, there are quite a few more - all you have to do is search the threads. Sooner or later you will run across a game (original or copy) that will freeze.

The only way in which a modchip can interfere with a game in play is if it involuntarily kicks in and deflects the PS2 from its current task.
So far (based on Magic 2 exerience) the SCEx problem (noise on the S line) has been an occasional problem, solved with the 1UF capacitor (see FAQ). So Magic 3 MIGHT hve a similar problem.
Magic 3 may have been developed in a way that allows other problems of electrical noise to occur. For example along the BIOS lines. So it could well be a bug in the Magic 3 but that opinionis pure speculation at this stage.

what I am wondering is have any of you with problems tried contacting magic about it? Not that they are necessarily going to be outright in admitting the problem exists but at this point it is a little hard to deny it. But maybe they could at least tell that they are aware of it and working on a solution or something. Hopefully the solution is not another chip but if it is I guess that is how it goes.
