Magic 3.1 stuck in sleep mode?
Magic 3.1 stuck in sleep mode? –
01-11-2003,04:35 PM
When the M3.1 is in sleep mode (after powering up and holding pwr/reset) to re-enable it all that I have to do is reset the ps2, right? If not, what's the correct procedure?
I ask this 'cause I just put one in a V1 GH-005 010 bios PS2 (what a pain those are!...), tested ok with about 4-5 cd-r's/dvd-r's and then it stopped working. Now it goes to the browser for a second, followed by the dreaded pink screen of death! I thought the chip may be stuck in sleep mode. Maybe I pushed pwr\reset too long or something. The PS2 is ok 'cause originals work fine. Checked all the wires, none broken/shorted. Removed Z but didn't help. I read about alternate points for W. Any suggestions? Thanx in advance...

Update:
Re-checked all 22 wires, ohmed to gnd and 5v, no shorts/cross shorts, all wires correct. I tried the alternate point for W, installed 1µF cap on S (- on chip, + on ps2 board, right?). still all I get is pink screen; only originals work.
This chip is either stuck in sleep mode or it's just incompatible with my 010 bios. ARGH!!!!
tomorrow gonna try it in a ver4 non-gap ps2. we'll see, wish me luck!

Nope, didn't work either; same symptoms...I the think the chip is bad. Gonna exchange it...

Another update:
I've tried 2 different Magic3 (originals NOT clones) chips on a V4 no gap ps2 that worked 100% with a neo2.2; same damn result! ps2 cd-r's and dvd-r's don't boot (pink screen)! Only PS1 cd-r's and ps2 origs. work. Tried alt. W on both, still no go! What the F*CK gives?
Gonna try the 2nd chip on a V2 010 ps2 Monday for my LAST useless (and replyless...) update
(I gotta stop replying to myself!)

All I can say is this sounds extremely familiar. Can't say that I am the least bit surprised. How wonderful it is to see that the same issues that plagued the Magic 2 also plague the Magic 3. Like yours, everything worked with a Neo 2.0 but didn't with the Magic. Check here if you are interested:

I had the exact same problem...I installed a magic 3 in a v4 no gap that had a neo 2.2 installed previously. With the neo 2.2 I could boot everything, but when I put the magic 3 in I could only boot originals and ps1 backups. After waisting two weeking trying different things, I finally exchanged the laser and it works perfect now. I wouldn't be surprised if you have the same problem. No matter how good your laser performs with the neo 2.2, when you put the magic 3 in there it needs more. Calibrating the laser did not improve the performance.

Thanx guys for your replies, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one with bad Magic3 chips (2). I think we were hosed, plain and simple. These damn chips were definitely NOT tested by the supplier/re-seller. They came in sealed static bags. I looked thru a magnifying lens and there were absolutely no test marks on the solder pads which proves my point.
Over a year ago I put a Neo4.1 on a ver. 4 ps2 and that chip HAD been tested (the pads had marks). That's probably why it still works today....

A Magic 2 worked great in my cousin's v7 ps2. It's like the M3 went backwards in time (and performance)....

yeah, that's true
magic2 were more stable than magic3
