Magic 3.1 Question

I recently purchased a Magic 3.1 (colored blue), and before I have it installed(looking for an installer on the East Coast), I just want to know, what are some cons the the Magic 3.1? The reason I bought it was because it was all I could afford. Bought it from www.psx-tech.com.

I really only plan on playing import Bemani games(DDRMAX, Beatmania IIDX, Drummania), PSX Backups, and PS2 DVD backups(GTA3/VC).

If there are alot of problems, Ill just get a refund, and buy a DMS3 or something. Thanks.

Im having it installed on a V7 PS2.


By the way, does the Magic 3.1 handle in-game disc changes, like for multi-disk imports?

the chip should be ok but the magic 3 will sometimes freeze up in certain games. The performance of the chip also depends on how it is installed. If the chip is installed sloppy with wires all over the place then you will experience more problems than you would usually with a neat and clean install job. I recommend getting a refund and buying a messiah 2 pro or DMS 3.

That's simply not true. It's a problem of Magic 3 chip. They corrected the bug for Magic 3.1 chip.

Yes, they solved the freezing bug....but they have yet to design a chip that boots 100%. Trust me, Eckostyle, you will be rebooting your console more than you like just to get a single game to boot. Yes, the Magic works, but only after several reboots. If you don't mind having to tap reset 3 and 4 times, the Magic will do fine for you.

Oh common, I have installed 2 Magic 3.1 and they aren't that bad. In fact it worked 8/10 of the time on the first boot without any problems.

I also have installed a few magic 3.1 and on version 4 or 5 they work great, on version 7 usually one reset to boot.

Well, I installed one in a V7 and one in a V4. Both system worked great on the first boot most of the time.

I agree that they boot pretty well.

Some bad things are (esp on v7) that it doesn't handle media checks beyond booting the game. If you get a 1:1 DVDR of Splinter Cell, you'll have problems with it (luckily there have been workarounds found).

Only problem is I'm noticing more games doing these media checks after boot time. From what I've heard, this is specific to v7 consoles, and to the m3.1 not handling this issue specifically (other chips seem to get past this problem).

I am yet to have issues with my magic 3.1 on my v4. Substance plays great, kaliso rips no problem, loves whatever i throw at it first boot everytime. Then i again i did a rather unorthodox install so that might have helped.
