Magic 3.1 Issues?
I finally managed to get my Magic 3.1 install (to a V7 console) to work -- it involved increasing the thickness of the wires used for 5V, GND, and RST, and replacing a kinked Z wire. Very noticeably trickier than installing a PSX modchip. I've been getting some odd booting behavior on one title, however.
My primary motivation for installing the Magic 3.1 was to get DVD-9 games to work -- specifically, Xenosaga, which wouldn't run with my NH3 even for an original NTSC-U/C disc. This was only partially successful, however; I can only get booting of my import copy of Xenosaga in less than 1 in 50 boot attempts (out of 110 boot attempts, two were successful) under the Magic 3.1. I have absolutely no problems booting the NTSC-U/C version of the same, however (both being originals). Starting up with a Codebreaker and swapping discs increases my boot rate for that disc to about 1 in 20 boots (5/100 boots, plus I can reload faster than with a direct boot), but this is quite annoying. Once going, however, the game is rock solid and shows no issues with hangs or misdetection at all.
I otherwise have few problems booting anything else I throw at it -- DVD-Rs, CD-Rs, HK silvers, original imports, etc. all boot easily and successfully about 80% of the time (significantly less than with the NH3, but I can live with it if I can boot DVD-9s), while original NTSC-U/C games boot 100% of the time. PSX games work nearly 100% of the time with this chip, compared with a rate more like 20% with the NH3.
Does anyone know of any way to improve the boot rate for the Xenosaga import, or with this chip in general? Thanks again for your help.
had the same problem but it would not play have of my games including xenosaga. but it played originals fine. after i even load directly from the browers screen and that just showed the playstation 2 logo, i got so mad i took that sorry a## chip out and installed the messiah 2 pro and never had another problem since. i am not sure what version board you have but they say some are harder to get the magic chip to work on. i figure you will be alot happier with the messiah, beleive me on this.
