Magic 3.1 installation. Need help troubleshooting
Magic 3.1 installation. Need help troubleshooting –

Ok, heres my story.
I soldered a Magic 3.1 in my 30004R V5 ps2.
First time i booted the machine, i only got a black screen, nothing more.
I removed the memory cards, and voila, it came to the "Select language"
screen. I reached for my controller, and the machine shut down. Reset button didnt work, only the eject button. Every time i started it up, it shut down immediately after, without any output whatsoever on the screen.
I opened it up again, and saw a few errors that had occured in the re-assembly.
After a few pointers given in different forums I changed the 5V and ground to 24AWG stranded wires, re-soldered Z, RST, and A + 3 of the points on the underside of the board (G, H and I). Checked the bios legs to my best for bridges, all seems good.
I want to try the multimeter next, but i'm unsure about how I should do that. Is this procedure correct: Set it in audio mode, put one pin on leg1 and the second pin on leg2. If there is audio, there is a bridge ..right? It would be great if anyone could tell me where to find info on how to test with a multimeter properly :-)
After the re-assembly,I started it up by pressing eject. The drawer came out, and the PS2 booted into the "Browser and System Config menu". (With the swirling electrons). I inserted an original game (WRC), and closed the drawer. I can hear the cd/dvd trying to spin up, but it seems as if it cant read the dvd. The sound is similar to those times you have a badly burned cd in your pc, spins up and stops repeatedly. I looked around in the menu, just to see if everything worked as normal in there, and it did.
I opened the cd drawer again, and closed it, same result.
Now, heres the strangest part.. I had trouble with the PS2 shutting down..now its the exact opposite that happens. I hold reset until it shuts down, waits a few seconds and it starts up again..automatically. Same thing happens if i turn off the switch in the back. Turning it back on, lights the red light, few seconds later, blue light and boot status. Strange ?? One sad thing is that after i had the successful boot into the browser/system screen, and reset the machine, i've lost the video output. When i turn the machine on, it doesnt send any signals to my tv it seems.
I feel that i'm getting close, so any more pointers from you experienced people out there are immensely appreciated.

sounds like somewhere bridged to me.
Check points around M~V. Mack sure that ic legs(or each points) don't have connection.
That's what I had exprienced.

The RESET/EJECT cable may be improperly seated in its clamp or somehow pierced by a screw when re-asssembling. Looks also like you have multiple problems like bridges and/or solder balls.
You shouldn't be prodding around with a multimeter whilst the PS2 is on. Expect a big blue flash any time.
I believe you need to take the PS2 to a pro.

Sorry for my English.
Check also point around b~I.
If the point I have a solder bridge with around point when you power up your ps2 you see a black screen.

Thanx for the feedback
Well, of course sending it to a pro would be the thing to do. All this fiddling around might do irreparable damage, but then again, one learn along this path..and thats what i'm aiming for in all this.
I know the ribbon cables are ok, i've been very careful around those. As for putting a multimeter inside while the ps2 is on..err, i'm not a moron.

I finetuned some of the solderings and wires.
Now it boots consistently into the browser/system screen, all audio in place and reset/eject buttons work normal.
However, when I try to read an original dvd game, it says No data in the middle of the screen, and "Reading disk" right under it. This screen defaults after a while to "Error reading disk". If i put in a cd-r backup, it immediately goes into the "please insert a Playstation or playstation 2 media .. " screen. Booting on a AR2 disk produces clicking and the red unknown media screen. Audio cd's load successfully, but starts to skip after a short while, and eventually stops playing.
I've looked at the FAQ's, seen the laser theory etc, but i cant believe that should be it, as it has never had any problems reading disks until now.
Any ideas before I try the recalibration?

Yet another update:
Hopefully someone will pick up on this, cause i'm sure its only one small detail that fecks it all up.. maybe :-)
I resoldered all points that has to do with cd/dvd, changed the W point to the alternate one. Checked for bridges and continuity with a multimeter. All points came up fine. No solder spillings could be found either.
I started the PS2 with a cd-r backup. It booted up as normal, i got the Playstation2 logo, as it normally do when there is a legit media in the player. Here the cd-rom started making some small clicking noise, stopped spinning and started again repeatedly.
This went on for a little while, and i shut it down to standby by holding reset.
Then i tried an original dvd game and movie. Both attempts ended in the browser/system screen. When i tried the cd-r that actually got detected the first time, now this also booted into the browser screen.
I have a 30004R V5 machine, and have never had any trouble with the laser, so i'm abit hesitant to do recalibration as said in ps2_Charlies FAQ.
Hopefully someone have some good suggestions :-)
