As I had mentioned in my NH3 review thread, I was considering trying a Messiah 2 or Magic 3.1 in my box to see if I could get DVD-9 support working in my 39001. I've recieved the Magic 3.1 that I had ordered, and the install went smoothly. I used an 8x magnifying lens to see the necessary solder points and make the necessary connections. All wires are snug and secure, and the correct points are soldered.
Despite this, however, I am unable to boot anything but PSX games. CD-R copies, HK bootlegs, and import originals all work for those, but DVD movies and PS2 non-NTSC-U/C games all RSOD. I've tried the alternate W point, as well as increasing the wire sizes leading to 5V and GND (to prevent chip starving), but these had no effect.
One strange thing -- the Browser menu had six circling lights under the NH3 chip and the system unchipped, but only shows one light with the Magic installed. Is this indicative of something wrong (apart from the obvious)?

About the only problem I found with another inspection was that Z had a kinked wire; I'm replacing it now. Would that be sufficient to cause the symptoms mentioned? I thought that Z only controlled redetection attempts.
