Magic 3.1 chips
Hi all. How do the Magic 3.1 chips run in the version 5 ps2's and up. Particularily version 7 or 9/10. I was going to use it in an older system which was the main purpose of getting it but im deciding to put it in a new system I just got. Should I even bother?
Does this chip perform poorly? especially in comparison to the Magic V which it's main purpose it to run in Versions 5 and up ps2 models.
I have two version 7's. One with magicV and the other with Magic 3.1. The only difference that I can tell between the two is that...on the MagicV you can boot DVD9. On the other hand...if you wanted to run a sony hdd, you can do that with the magic 3.1 and load the hdd utility disc patched and it lets the hdd show up in the browser.
So that's the only difference. You don't notice one running better than the other (ie, reading backups) do you?
I think I read somewhere that the magic 5 fixed some problems that the 3.1 had. Have you heard about this and is it true?
But other than that, it doesen't look like a major difference between the two.
I've read all of that stuff...and to be honest with ya, I've never had a problem with the 3.1. On my 3.1 console, I have a sony hdd with the beta hdd utility disc. When I put the chip in sleep mode, the hdd shows up in the browser screen. I have a Memory Card Saves folder that I can copy, move and all of that back and forth. Then you can restart your console with a backup in and it plays fine. On my V console...the sony hdd isn't even recongnized and doesn't allow me to boot backups. I have a Western Digital in that one running linux. Just prefference I guess.
Couple other details... there are a bunch of newer game titles that will not work when the 3.1 is installed. The 5 took care of that.
Also, the 3.1 will work on consoles up to V7... nothing above it. So if you have a newer system, no joy. China-Magic came up with the MagicV 50K and 5K6 for the V9 and 10.
Other than that, the 3.1 is an okay chip. In fact, for a year or so it was the number one PS2 chip. But its' glory days are over.
