Hi,
I have a minor problem with my Magic 3.1. Sometimes when I turn on the ps2 with a cdr or dvdr already in, it won't boot the game and I have to hit reset one or two times for it to load. The same thing sometimes happens if I power on and put a game in and hit reset.
Which wires should I check? I have 22awg wire on the power and ground connections. I upgraded from Magic 3.0.

Hope i can help you, well from my experience in installing over 50 modchips these things make a difference on the performance of the modchip. #1 the wiring, the wires need only small amount of solder not big amounts ( balls ), how the wires are maneuvered around on the board .The wires need to be run along the board away from main components as much as possible( fasten down with tape or hot glue). . Shrink tubing is nice for this. The length of your wires should all be pretty even, not 1 wire 1 inch long and another 10 inches long etc... Your ground and power wires should be 20 awg ( i find single strand wires are the best ). If you have a multimeter around check the power wire for proper voltage. # 2 when soldering the wires to ps2 board points coat your end of the wire with solder and dip in flux.. i cant stress enough, to much solder is no good. Use a low wattage soldering iron... it is very easy to damage or warp parts of the ps2 board. Hey if you have a digital camera why dont you take a picture? well hope something i said helped.

mine has the same problem, but mine boots PSX CD-R, Originals, PS2 DVD-R, PS2 Originals flawlessly EVERYTIME but refuses to boot PS2 CD-R Backups, I am gonna swap for an old laser unit that does read dvd-r/dvds of any kind and try the ps2 cd-r games ith that, if it works ill recalibrate my v7 laser

Thanks a LOT for the help. I just cracked it open and rearranged the wires. Busted 3 of them off the bios chip and resoldered them SOLID and the joints are shiney. I made sure none of the wires cross on top of any IC's and wrapped wires together with electrical tape, and taped wire down to the board.
So far, the system is giving me 0 problems booting. I've just booted a couple games that were giving me trouble. Hopefully my problem is fixed. It looks very solid so far. I'll make an update if it starts acting up again or an update if it doesn't act up again for a long time hehe.

I have a Magic 3.1 installed on a v7 and i am also having the same problem with booting CD backups. I had a fliptop before I got the Magic...so I decided to try booting my swap magic CD and use the flip top to boot the games. Guess what....the games booted fine with the flip top...but the magic gave me an RSOD. I am going to get a Messiah2 now.
cold connections are caused when the wire is moved when the solder is solidifying. Use flux also when soldering !! flux makes the solder flow better and you will get more solid connections!!!

Well sometimes some rips will freeze or give red screen still, but I guess it isn't as bad as before. I think the Magic 2 clone I had in there was more reliable for booting, but this one is cool. I think this magic 3.1 just causes the laser to be more picky about media. Verbatims boot up fine in it and CMC magnetics sometimes give problems. I've heard similar problems with this chip from various other people, so I'm not worried about it. At least I got in there and cleaned up my wiring a bit. Next time I mod a ps2, I'm going to be a lot more careful about the wires. those stupid things like to find their way under the grounding plate while screwing it back together. Drives me nuts :P It's just that I've had this one apart 3 times so the second time, the wires weren't packed in the way I wanted.
I've seen this chip freeze GTA VC but nowhere near as often as the magic 3.0 I had in there. I decided to hang onto that extra chip cuz it is fairly useful. Just gotta add a switch to the mod when using it is all.
tack the wires down in bunches with hot glue...
I used Alcohol 120% after hearing about it all over these forums and now absolutely ALL my backups boot correctly 100% of the time. So much for that Messiah!
shouldn't matter what software you burn with, just what speed and what media you use.
