Thread: Lowering fan speed

Hi, I lowered my fan speed by connecting the fan to a transformator instead of the ps2 board. The fan is running at 3v now so it hardly makes any noise. Could this harm my ps2? It's not getting warm and so is the airflow coming from the fan.

    Thanks

When $ony researched the fan for their consoles, they would have found an optimim airflow value with the least amount of noise in nearly all weather type conditions.
Having your fan run much slower will drasticly reduce the airflow, which might be ok in cold weather conditions, but in times of hot weather, your PS2 may crash due to overheating.
Overheating any component could reduce the life of it, and if it happends too often, may cause total failure.
Your best off leaving it run at the correct speed, or fitting more fans to overcome the loss of airflow. But by adding more fans, you have to make sure you orient them correctly so the airflow will travel in the right direction.

I'm running it at 4,5v now, after playing hours no overheating or whatsoever.

I doubt that half a volt will matter at all. The fan would be running a few revolutions less, but your airflow would probably be almost the same.

I thought it was 6v at default I thought 3v couldn't harm since there will be coming a new ps2 version with lowered fan speed right? But maybe they have some optimized heatsinks or whatever.

the new ps2 version comes with the EE and GS chips together (IIRC), thus reducing heat output which means that the fan speed can be lowered.
