If you put a mod chip in and did NOT apply a diode/summone/v12 fix then your laser might very well be going. Music cutting in and out and long load times could be a sign of the laser having trouble reading data (it could be a sign of other things too, though)
One thing is sure...the modchip doesn't affect the speed at which data loads (it shouldn't, anyways). If your original games do this as well, then you can be pretty sure that its the laser or drive that has a problem.
If it is only your backups, then check if you're using quality media and that your burner isn't making crappy copies.
wait a minute...
i think i have this little v12 fix thingy...its like a L shaped chip-set on the left bottom part on my ps2, with my modbo around the center side. anyways, i heard there is a way to install two or three resistors on ur motherboard to limit the laserwork, does that help?
and i've seen a post about upgrading the modbo power supply to 5V, does that help?
my modding:
matrix infinity: on and off 6 times
external speakers /w leading wire: done
memory card LED (activity + connectivity): done
controller status LED change + vibration LED: done
color-change lighting in v12: done
rgb to vga for monitors: FAILED due to not enough material
portable/internal LCD: sadly failed, as ps1 screen doesnt fit. planning same mod with intec screen
external harddisk for v12: CANCELED due to v12 breakdown
window for ps2 dvd-drive mod: in progress
