Right. The only wrong thing here is that Sony and Maxtor (Seagate too) did that back in 2001 when Sony originally planed to release the HDD for all regions ... I know of people who got "samples" of the US game HDD back on march 2002 with the HDD Utility disc 1.0. Even pics of the thing floated on the internet at that time.

I don't have PS2 Linux, but I do have a japanese game HDD.
It's a Maxtor 4D040H2 (Diamond Max 5400) with modified firmware. It is 100% ATA compatible with added commands for the PS2 use. It will work on a PC without trouble in case you want to kick your PS2 away ... lol
