laser problems –

No apparent Disk activity
There is an outside chance that the servo ICs driving the magnetos on the lens have overheated because they have been run for more than 20 minutes without conducting heat away
can someone please explain how this could happen

it could happen in hell
that is a TRUE rarety..
maybe if the grounding for the laser is detached (or not connected) then there would be no way for the heat to 'run off', but thats a shot in the dark (im no expert with the ps2 laser)

You hve to open her up and see if the heat conducting pads on the chips marked BA58 and BA66 are still there and fully bearing on the metal case (which has tohave been tightly screwed down).
If any of these conditions are not true then your BA58 or BA66 may have overheated and given up.
But you provide no history of your PS2, what has been done to it (if nothing has been done then disregard the above). If it's an old machine, unmodified, and you've whacked it to bits, then it's just given out. We cant tell on the info you've provided.

hi there sorry charlie_ps2

ps2 is less than 3weeks old installed magic3 a weak or so ago been having media problems so i was testing airblade on cdr and all was great no probs at all had solved the media issues ps2 just didnt like cheap media
so after playing for a while i decided to play something else so i changed the cd and reset the ps2 now all that happens is the sony entertainment comes on then it goes straight to the browser/systems settings menu.
i checked the cd drive and all it does on boot is laser pulses once just on and off and the spindle spins and thats all i can get out of it

wow; i have the same problem and some people had the same problem. magic 3 = shit. i've already removed my chip and i'll spend some money to fix my ps2 problems, money that i havent yet. (arrgh!).
I think your problem is: the laser is broken
solution (the guy from tech support told this, not me) : buy another laser unit and change it. ah, if you don't want to change the laser unit again change the ****in magic3 too.

i know the laser is at fault and i know why it broke what i want to know is how to ensure it dont happen again!
@Charlie_ps2 is it poss the the magic3 i have is outputting too much voltage on one of its pins and this is what caused the problem?
