I was playing GTA: Vice City the other night and i was just cruising around on the motorbike and then all the textures went missing and the loading screen came up and i could hear the laser moving but with some horrible sounds (well horrible if you love your PS2 as much as I do :P). And it's not the clicking sound of it not picking up.

Upon inspection I found that the laser motor keeps on moving the laser forward (towards the middle area of the disc) and although it has reached the end of the track, it keeps on pushing it, thus the terrible noises.

I have thoroughly inspected the unit and i do not believe the problem lies within any of the cables (though i could be wrong). Maybe one of the fuses blew?

Please Advise! my college semester has just ended and my baby isn't working!!! ARRRGHHH!! the frustration! .

    Specs as follows:
    ntsc-J scph 35000 GT3 pack.
    V4 Datecode 1D.
Mod: HK Spider Mod / DVD-ic (same chip as the Neo2.2 but only seems to share 1 or 2 common points with the neo)

Not a solution, but most if not all CD/DVD mechanisms have a microswitch that tells the laser it has hit the begining or end of the track.

You might want to check and see if the microswitch is damaged or disconnected.

I'll ponder this a little more and update if I can think of anything else.

Oh, and while I'm at it, ditch that pig of a modchip and go fully non swap. Most of those neo/dvd key/solderless chips are laser killers.

yeah i was in the process of getting money together to finally mod the thing (since my college sem has ended, less strain on my funds! :P i'm in an art foundation course btw, so i spend quite alot daily ).

Where is this microswitch? what does it look like? does it physically look like a switch?

    oh more details:
Audio CD's work but infrequently. music skipping is quite frequent.
PS2 games read in the memory card screen, shows the disc but activating it only brings u to a black screen and back to the memory card screen. the noises previously mentioned are audible, if a little softer than before.

    thanks.

You can stop pondering now, i have discovered what has been causing the problems. What i noticed was that upon closer inspection of the bottom of the laser housing, i noticed that somehow the ribbon (yellow-brownish colour) directly below (and attached to the housing) is damaged.

Thanks though . Now, to get a replacement . (Arrghh!! now i gotta wait even longer to collect cash to put in a no-swapper :P)
