Kinda confused after a Magic install.
Kinda confused after a Magic install. –

I just installed a Magic 3.1 into a us v5. It's not a fresh install, there was a Magic 2 clone in it before, and it worked perfectly. All I did was swap the chips and I'm almost %100 certain that the connections to the ps2 board are still connected right and solid.
Ps2 original cds work fine, but no dvd's (originals or dvd-r) will work. PS1 originals and backups, and dvd movies work fine in PS1 mode. Here's the majority of my confusion, PS2 original DVD's will only boot in PS1 mode.
Any suggestions all you super intelligent people?

If I remember correctly, the Magic 2 did not have a W point, or it was in a different spot. Check that for one thing. You are showing classic symtoms of a mis-install. There is atleast one wire wrong somewhere.

I don't think it's W. According to China-magic, the w point on the magic 2 went to a via, on the magic 3 it's on the leg of a component that looks like it trails to that same VIA. So in essence wouldn't that be the same point? The only point I saw as different was point F on the magic 2, it's not on the Magic 3.
Would moving point W from the one in the magic2 install to the magic3 install makea difference?

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, but I started from scratch on a brand new V7 PS2. I can boot everything except DVDr. Wether its good media or cheap media I keep getting the Red Screen Of Death. Original DVD's work just fine though. I'm going to look at it again tomorrow and see if any wires are crossed. I've done plenty of install before but this is the first time I've had this problem with a brand new machine. If it was old I would blame it on the laser. Hopefully this is not my problem because the unit is only 2 days old.

Let me know if you come by something that fixes your problem and I'll do the same....

Hmmm still confused. The diagrams for the magic2 show different spots for w and 5v. But if those spots worked on the magic2, wouldn't they work on the magic3? Also I don't have 22awg for the 5v, it's the same as the other wires, except ground. But if it's booting ps1 backups, then that 5v should be right, correct?

WOOOOHOOOOOO
Well if anyone is still interested I managed to get this thing working. After re-re-re-re-re-reading charlie's guide, and using a multimeter instead of my eyes, I realized that I had wires I and H mixed up. DOH stupid me.
But I got it working, thanks for the suggestions and info guys.
