Just installed my very first mod, M2!! Works, mostly...PSX/DVD movie prob
NOTE: I have a V1 PS2, used 243 1.08 M2 with fix
PROBLEMS: PSX and DVD movies are detected, but ps2 freezes and laser makes clicking noises.
I have finally done it. I'm not the best in soldering, and I never installed a mod chip before so I took my time. 3 days to be more exact. Was pretty scary when soldering those legs of the dvd controller. I had such roten luck that I bridged the last 2 legs, argh. Luckily though it wasn't hard to fix. Checked everything 15 times, while soldering and at the end, and it turned out pretty well. I made sure to make my wires as short as I could, for a better signal. I don't have a DVD burner yet, still waiting for my Sony Dru-500a, but PS2 games on CDR work 100%. So I'm guessing DVD's will work aswell. Only problem is, no PSX games or DVD movies work unless I turn OFF the M2. Tried 3 burned PSX games, and origonals and they all have the same problem. Yes I did boot by holding reset until the blue eject light came on (is there another method?). The PSX logo comes up, it freezes and the lens makes clicking noises. If I turn OFF the Messiah2, PSX origonals boot fine. If I load a PSX game like it would be a normal PS2 game, it'll bring me to the browser. I heard of PSX games not loading, but I never heard anything about freezing at the PSX logo screen. Not really a big problem though, there are only a few PSX games I'm interested in and I can buy them for pretty cheap. I think I know what the problem might be. I used the alternate Scex/Clk points described over at foundmy.com. Before you jump to the conclusion and say "yeah that's it", please continue to read :). I know the Scex point is the important point to boot PSX games for a Magic2/3, but I thought Messiah2's needed the Scex point for both PS2 and PSX, so what's up? All other points I'm very sure are soldered good, checked so many damn times :). Only thing strange is that I had a slight resistance on some connections when I tested them. I believe points M-V all had a cable resistance of 0.3ohms. I put one multimedia pointer on a point on the Messiah2, and the other at a via connected to the M-V solder points. Strangly enough these were all in the same group of connections, all other registered as perfect on my multimeter. One other change I did was point A. Instead of soldering to the side of the resistor/capacitor, I choose the leg of the dvd controller. It's the same thing though. Playing DVD's is kinda similar though. I use the same method as booting PS1 games, it detects it but when it starts loading It again makes clicking noises. Booting PS1 and DVD games use the same booting method, what other similarities do they have?
So what do you guys think, should I blame it on the Scex point? Well if it is, I'm not going to change it for the origonal. Not worth it, so much work to get to the origonal point just to boot PSX copies...nah! hehe. Kind of strange though, I'd thought if the PSx game has been detected this means the scex point was fine. Instead if freezes at the PSX logo screen, really weird. What about DVD's though, that's kinda important? PSX/DVD movies have a similar problem, so it must be the same problem. Well for the most part I'm happy I can boot PS2 games, well CDR's of course as I havn't tested DVD-R's yet. Hopefully they will work :).
