I Just bought 2 Magic 3.1 ModChips because me and my friend wanted to mod our playstions to play back ups ect.. I bought them from modchip.com and the review sounded good. Then I did a search here and it looks like everyone has problems with these?? Well I think I will still install it but I'm kind of worried? Should I be?
I also have a question on the install. I have researched the how to find what ps2 you have and I belive I have a V4. Now what I don't understand when i go to how to's to install the Magic 3.1 ModChip they have v4 GAP and v4 NO GAP WTF is that mean?? If anyone can help me out it would be great!!
thanks
John

they will work just not for autoboot or most new dvd-9games and DL Backups.
The gap and no gap refers to the pins on the bios look at the install digs..

So the web site states false info?? It says it is dvd9 ready and it says it direct boots everything?? Thats what confuses me the most on this forum everyone says it doesn't do this and it doesn't do that but the web sites that sell it list that it does all of those things? here is a copy and paste of what the web page says.
Direct boot Imports / Backups without the swap method - just like Originals
Direct boot of PSX original Imports
Direct boot of PSX Backups (CD-R)
Direct boot of PlayStation 2 original Imports (CD and DVD)
Direct boot of PlayStation 2 Backups (CD-R and DVD+/-R)
Direct boot of original EA Sports Imports
Direct boot of EA Sports Backups (without EA-Patch)
Direct boot of DVDR Rips
Multi Disc und DVD9 ready
NTSC and PAL ready
ActionReplay MAX, ActionReplay V2 and GameShark2 ready (for all who use GS2 / AR2 cheatcodes)
ON / OFF modus to deactivate the Modchip function (sleep / stealth function)
Does not effect your DVD player - all original features of the PlayStation 2 remain the same
Autodetect the PlayStation 2 version and region (NTSC, PAL) - don't worry which country you are in
Bonus Feature: Full Screen Display

Direct boot means that it can boot without swap ( swap magic....blaze....action replay) Two modes: ps2 games and ps1 games/movies
Autoboot is another thing. It means that modchip can autodetect format and play it ps2/ps1/movies directly without forcing it manualy

oh I see. So How Do you have to force it manually? I really don't care as long as I can Get it to work I only use playstation 1 and 2 games I have a dvd player so I don't think I ever played them in the ps2 unit. I would really like to know how you have to force it for the difrent media type don't quite understand that. I had a modded ps1 and you just put the back up disks in and it booted automaticly. But it was supposed to be able to play imports but they showed up black and white and sound was messed up. I hope I can get this chipin right and get it up and running with every thing working!
thanks Guys

Hi johnsrt4 , my first modchip was a magic3.1+ in a v7 and it's still going strong. haven't had any problems. Here are the boot-up procedures for the different media.
It is assumed that your PS2 is in Standby mode (PS2 is not switched on).
PS2 Games:
Method 1:
-Press EJECT button to switch on the PS2.
-Insert PS2 game in tray.
-Tap RESET button once, the PS2 would reboot and then load your game.
Method 2:
- Press EJECT button to switch on the PS2.
- Insert PS2 game in tray, the press EJECT button to close tray.
- The disc will then take 2-5 seconds to be recognized and then boot.
To boot another game when already playing a game:
- Press EJECT button.
- The current game would then pause and the tray would come out.
- Change to another PS2 game disc and tap RESET button once.
- The PS2 would reboot and then load your game.
PS1 Games:
- Press EJECT button to switch on the PS2.
- Insert PSX game in tray, then press and hold RESET button to switch off the PS2.
- Now hold the RESET button to start up your PS2. Only release the RESET button once the Blue LED light of the Eject button lights up.
DVD Movies:
- Press EJECT button to switch on the PS2.
- Insert DVD movie in tray, then press and hold RESET button to switch off the PS2.
- Now hold the RESET button to start up your PS2. Only release the RESET button after like 4-5 seconds.
Disable Mode:
- Hold the RESET button for like 4-5 seconds to boot up your machine.

yup, just like cleo, I have a Magic 3.1 on my v5-v6, and hasn't given me any problem so far, yet I still haven't tried DVD9 gemes, but DVD9 movies sure worked well when I used it for movie playback
