Japanese PS2

I might have to mod a Japanese PS2 in the foreseeable future.

Before I blindly go in and have my friend buy a western chip (MI), is there anything I should know about japanese vs us ps2s?

I don't know what version it is yet, all I know is that my friend wants to be able to play US games on it.

I have not upgraded one but the chips I use have diagrams for the jap consoles.
So just follow the JAP diagrams provided by (mI) for the model purchased.
