I have a V4 NTSC that has a laser that is going bad. I know this because I use a no-solder mod and it recently started having trouble playing the DVD-R's that it used to boot with no problem. Now there is a clicking sound after my DMC swap and when it does that, the game won't boot.
Anyway, I have read the FAQ's & guides and did a search on this forum to learn how to replace my laser. My question is Will I be able to replace it myself? Will I have to recalibrate it after the install? Should I let a pro do it? And lastly, where is the best place to buy a replacement laser? Thanks in advance!!

Yes - get a pro to do it. The laser will need recalibration because it has never met the PS2 before.

I recommend first step is to use PS2 DIAGNOSIS ON mode to force recalibarion and to try DVD-Rs. If that's OK no worries. If not then it will need first Laser Azimuth adjustment (then try it) and if not laser recliabration. All in the FAQ section.

Dunno where you buy lasers in the USA.

Actually, most of the lasers that I have purchased I have gotten from the UK. They have all come already tested and calibrated. Try here: http://www.kanection.co.uk/page102.htm

The calibration bit: The pots are an analogue and their calibration settings on a given PS2 are unlikely to be valid on another. That's what we found

One UK purchase site is www.kanection.co.uk
