Is this true? How would I do this, I have a magic 3 chip.
at the moment, no. but it's looking likely to be possible in the near future.
to give a summary - a direct copy of GT4 onto dual layered media will not work, because the 2nd layer of the retail copy is burned using PTP (parallel track path) but dvd-writers can only burn in OTP (opposite track path) meaning the file on the second layer is written backwards, so when the game checks for data in it, it looks in the wrong place.
to fix this, these media checks need to be redirected. at the moment this is only possible if you have a ***4 or Matrix Infinity with the appropiate firmware that redirects the checks on the fly.
alternatively the checks can be removed from the game files. however this requires copying the game to hard drive and patching the files. so far no one has found a way of burning the files back to DVD in the correct places (a specific file, GT4L1.VOL, needs to be on the 2nd layer).
however the patched files can be run from hard drive, so if you've got a hard drive in your PS2 you can FTP the patched files across and play the game.
so these are your options:
1) ***4 and Matrix Infinity users can play from hard drive or dual layer backup no problem. lucky people.
2) ANY hard drive user can run patched files from hard drive
3) Those with any other chip and no hard drive (or simply a desire to have a dual layer backup) need to wait patiently for someone to figure it out. Either a fully working patched DVD9 or a version ripped down to DVD5 size should be possible and are being worked on
i too have a Magic 3 and am waiting for a solution so i can sympathise![]()
Eu uso o magic 3, comprei uma versao em Pal de GT4, uso um cabo NTSC-PAL converter (SCPH-301BB), estou carregando o GT4 com DVD Loader( ou CD Loader) e funciona muito bem, sem bugs e colorido.
I`m sorry for my weak english
I use the magic 3, I bought a version in Pal of GT4 (DVD9), I use a cable NTSC-PAL to convert (SCPH-301BB), I am carrying GT4 with DVD Loader (or CD Loader) and it works very well, without bugs and color.
I have a modbov1.1 with 1.4 firmware and it works no problem. It's a clone of the Matrix Inifity

well anyway I got of subjuct. GT4 on a magic 3 chip it will probley have to wait till someone can come up with a dvd5 rip that works pretty good. Another thing abut DVD+DL is its not real dvd9 its acutaly like dvd8. true dvd9 is 9.2 gigs and can be over burned to 9.6 gigs. DL is only 8.5 gigs no Idea what you can over burn it too though. But I do know this looks like some of the game makers have found away to stump most of us from making GT4 getting copied. I for one is just going to buy the game instead of wasting 12.00 on a DVD+DL disc. I understand backups are good to have but if the back up is 1/5 of the cost of the real thing. Thats too much money spent on a backup. I don't mind wasting the .25-3.00 on backups but just not worth for this game to me. But I know alot of other don't see it the way I do.
I have the matrix infinity with the 1.4 FW and my GT4 backup works with no problems whatsoever. All i did was ripped the image using dvddecrypter and than burned it on a DL DvD+R and it plays with no patches!
Just use the Matrix Infinity firmware same thing
