How to tell if V9 use HD-7?

I have a version 9 motherboard and i'm pretty sure that it uses an HD-7 laser but i'm not sure, because my laser might be defective. When the HD-7 laser is connected it clicks quietly and the disc moves in small rotations back and forth. I have KHS-400C that works on another console and when i connect it with his V9 it makes a very very loud click noise and it sounds like the lense is hitting the disc, so maybe its getting too much power. Could it be that the LA chip is dead? How can i check? or is the HD-7 laser dead? Thanks

there will be HD7 embossed on the cover of the laser. THey are really terrible lasers but cannot be easily swapped with any other lasers. if its a v9 it could very well be a hd7.do you know of the romeo mod was done to board? if not your la and laser could be toast.

there's no easy way to check the LA - but symptoms of a dead LA are no eject, no focusing. check the fuse next to the LA - if its gone the LA probably needs to be replaced. also check the laser coils - if they are too low and no romeo was done then you will have to replace the laser and possibly the LA as well.

I´ve changed from HD7 to 400c in 3 customers v9 the last three weeks.
If it´s read cd´s there should not be a problem with the LA
Otherwise just change it.I´ll finded a site on yhe net and gave it a try and the PS2 v7-v9 that I´ve done all works great.If you get problem with the reading of cd´s just change the R1 to 620-650 Ohm´s
R1 560-650 Ohm (the values that worked for me)
R2 560 Ohm (have always worked for me)
Good luck and don´t forget to do the ROMEO mod

Hey how well does this conversion work? It sounds like a good idea to do this when a customer brings in a bad HD7 PS2.

i did the romeo mod. but does this sound like a bad laser or a bad LA chip?

it sounds like laser, try adjusting the azumith and laser height or the laser pots, if you can get it to read a cd, you could use the lenschanger elf and reprogram to 400c, or if you have a modchip with dev mode that you can boot pukklink from memory card, you could do it that way. I have changed 4 R type lasers and 2 HD7 in the last week to 400c using lenschanger and all work perfect.

the ps2 doesn't cd's or dvd's. I tried the conversion with the resistors and it didnt work either. I read somewhere that if a certain pin is grounded, it means that the LA chip is dead.

Why don't you just use the laser changer program?

I dont have the right usb cable. Could you flash it to KHS for me? I'll pay. And you live in San Jose(I think), which is very close to me.
