help: utility disk + knife method / no mod
help: utility disk + knife method / no mod –
11-13-2002,10:11 AM
Hi,
Need to kill time before I order a Messiah2 or Magic 3 for my Jap SCPH-10000 and want to try some backups on the my ps2.
I've spent a few days searching hi and lo on the net for info/ instructions on how to play backup CDR's on Jap v0 (SCPH-10000) with only the original utility disk and knife method (plus patching the CDR image). So far only I've collected bits and pieces of info and I am not sure I have all the instructions in place. I know I need to properly patch the CDR's (Used ASA patcher using the Jap 1.01 utility disk patch).
1. insert original Utility disk
2. press reset
3. wait 10 sec
4. do knife or lh swap method
I've been sitting here for a whole afternoon with a stop watch next to me and I yet to get this to work. Screen either freezes blank after disk swap and the CD drive continues to buzz at high speed or it will go to the intro screen (memory card or cd option startup screen). Choosing the cd option leads to the red "insert ps2 disk" deadend...
Until I get a no swap mod chip, I was hoping I could try some of these backups without having to buy either a swap magic,GS, or AR disk.
Any of you old timers who have the original Japanese models remember what ya did to play CDR's before mod chips came out? Or is it simply all the latest games have some protection that requires a modchip/swap magic/ ar/gs to overide? Also was told this above method could work with DVDr as long as I used a original DVD game and patched the DVDr appropriately...
Thanks,

Thanks,
Old timer #1...
Anyways, to make a long story short, check my other postings in another thread of this section for my boot method. That way I think is best. I've never been a fan of the timing thing...high rate of screwing up.
If you want to hear my method of booting up, back in the day...I'll definitely share it with you, but make sure you don't kill yourself. I call it the "Spinning disks of death"
Take the cover off your PS2, take the cover off the drive motor, remove the white disk from the cover.
Put your original disc in the drive and place the white disk over the disc to lock it in. Boot from standby mode, count 10 secs or just as the drive changes speed, pull the white disc off, flip the disc off from underneath with a finger, place the backup in, replace the white disc.
Should boot.
Heh.....come to think of it.....hooking up the tray switch and buying a AR2/GS2 sounds a lot better now, doesn't it?

daBrass,
Which version of AR or GS are u using. I tried a friend's AR v 1.3 and it didn't work on my non-modded console.

If you're using a JAP 10000 model, the AR 1.3 should work, provided it is supposed to be for the JAP PS2. Most of the AR are made for EUR machines and won't boot on JAP PS2s.
I have both a AR1.3 from karat and a AR2V2 from Datel. Both work find on my 10000 model.

The problem is more than likely the size of your cd-r games...Are these downloaded, ripped, or straight copies?

Limbfilter, Mostly straight copies. Some of them are rips. Actually that was my next question. I guess this swap procedure will work as long as the backup games' TOCs are smaller than the utility disk. If they are larger, then I need to find a larger original game to creat the patch? Is that correct?
Is there any rule of thumb to figure out a disc's TOC from loading it on a PC and checking its size there? Pain in the arse, to rip each one to see what the actual TOC (image size) is.

well...I actually have no idea of the toc on the utility disc...but for the gameshark it's 632 MB...If you swap your util disc w/ original then backup you original would have to be bigger than your backup.....mgs2 gameshark ntsc is the biggest cd game if I remember. However I don't know if I would go to all this trouble if your messiah is on it's way...
